국문 초록

한의학이나 서양의학 모두 이론만을 가진 학문이 아닌 실천을 구성요소로 성립된 학문이다. 의사의 주관과 상황에 맞는 적절한 변용(變容)을 중시하는 한의학의 모습을 철학이라고 규정하는 것은 현대의 의료체계에서 의사의 의사결정의 과정을 철학이라고 표현하는 것과 마찬가지이다. 이와 같은 이분법(二分法)적인 가름의 배경에는 분리와 나눔을 지향하는 정치적, 인식론적 대립이 존재한다. 인식론적 우위를 지향하는 과학주의도, 또한 한의학의 동양문화적 완결성(完結性)을 주장하는 논의도 결국, 정치적 힘의 대결로 수렴된다면 우리가 미래에 가져야 할 통합적 의학의 성립은 요원해진다 하겠다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 통합의 단초가 될 수 있는 ‘몸’ 위주의 의료인류학적 담론을 소개하고, 그것을 통해 서양의학과 한의학이 조우(遭遇)할 수 있는 가능성과 그러한 작업을 통해 얻을 수 있는 의학의 본질에 대한 비판적 검토의 가능성에 대해 논의한다.

영문 초록

EAM prizes subjectivity in practice while western bio-medicine tries to kill it as thoroughly as possible. So there goes the saying, ‘EAM is a philosophy and western medicine is a science.’ However, this paper argues that it’s a case of pre-reflective simplification in that EAM’s emphasis on subjective engagement in practice actually parallels the process of physicians’ decision making in modern bio-medical settings. Furthermore, medicine cannot be a pure science as many research findings have shown to us. Behind this simplified frame of reference lies the epistemological and political conflict between these two medicines. What’s necessary for us is a perspective that’s not parochial, but is able to resort to our inter-subjectivity. As one such option of possibility, this paper presents the arguments concerning the tactile and sensible ‘body,’ through which the new possibility of synthesizing the experiences gained in EAM traditions and the knowledge from the biomedicine could be explored and critically assessed in an entirely different dimensions of perspectives.
