국문 초록

본 글은 엘리자베스 비숍의 「브라질, 1502년, 1월 1일」을 기독교에 대한 회의주의의 관점에서 조망하고 재고하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 작품에서 시인은 과거 포르투갈의 기독교인 식민주의자들의 시선에서 인식된 브라질의 자연 풍경을 제시한다. 그들의 시선에서 묘사되는 그 풍경 안에는 다양한 기독교적·성서적 요소들이 내재한다. 비스듬한 방식으로 제시되는 그 종교적 요소들은 자연적 대상물들, 특정한 단어들, 그리고 색채가 지닌 상징과 의미 등을 통해 암시적으로 드러난다. 무엇보다도 여기에서 비숍은 종교가 인간의 이기심과 세속적 욕망 충족을 위해 유용되는 양상을 자연 풍경의 묘사와 식민주의자들의 특정 행동을 중심으로 에둘러 표현함으로써, 궁극적으로 종교의 세속화 현상을 비판한다. 그러한 비판의식 기저에는 근본적으로 종교에 대한 시인의 회의주의적 시선이 깔려있다고 본다. 이 읽기는 비숍 연구에 있어 그 비평적 시야를 더 넓게 확장시킬 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to re-read Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “Brazil, January 1, 1502” from the viewpoint of religious skepticism. Containing a number of Biblical and religious connotations, this poem depicts the Portuguese colonizers arrived at Brazil in the past. Bishop criticizes those who tended to appropriate Christian religion for their selfish benefits and ends to their worldly taste. The religious secularization portrayed in the poem would be usually alluded through natural things, particular words and colors. To discuss Bishop’s skeptical view of Christianity in this poem, I cite some Biblical stories and Christian materials and go on exploring the symbolic meanings of colors in relation to Christianity. Analyzing the poem in terms of religious skepticism, I try to invite readers to re-consider and expand the critical scope of the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop that didn’t garner the critical attention in terms of religion. I conclude that religious skepticism for Bishop becomes an angle of viewing and speculating the world and her age, hoping to broaden the horizon of Bishop studies and the landscape of modernism.
