국문 초록

본고에서는 『홍루몽』 텍스트에 소품으로 등장하는 역대 명화와 서예 작품들이 해당 공간에서 어떠한 분위기를 조성하고 그곳에 사는 인물들과 어떠한 상호작용을 하는지 분석함으로써 『홍루몽』 속 전통 서화 예술의 의의와 가치를 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 『홍루몽』에서 서화는 인물의 성격을 드러내 보여주고 스토리를 이끌어가는 하나의 중요한 서사적 장치로 운용되었다. 처음에는 서화의 자체적인 형상으로 독자에게 다가가나 어느 순간 공간 속의 인물과 어우러지면서 모종의 의미체계로 독자에게 수용되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그런 점에서 『홍루몽』의 서화 예술은 단순히 그림이나 글씨라고 하는 개별적인 소품의 차원에 머물지 않고 인물 감상 및 주제의 차원으로 확장되어 소설의 경계를 더욱 높은 수준으로 고양시켜 주었다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Poetry, calligraphy and painting, with their relevance to the inner dignity and elegance of writers, have become the most sublime art form through the historical change in the Chinese traditional era. Thus, almost all noblemen or aristocrats of traditional era owned a few pieces of paintings and calligraphic works in their homes. This study analyzes historical paintings and calligraphic works in the text of 『The Dream of Red Chamber』 that vividly describe the unique lifestyles of noble families during Qing Dynasty. By analyzing what atmosphere the paintings and calligraphic works brought in relevant spaces and what correlations they had with people living there, this study intends to bear witness to the significance and value of the art of traditional painting and calligraphic works in 『The Dream of Red Chamber』 . First, while, for the artist, the paintings and calligraphic works in 『The Dream of Red Chamber』 functioned as an effective formal technique and device, for readers they became aesthetic things to take a look and appreciate. Second, the painting and calligraphic works hint at characters's personalities and are thus used as one of the significant narrative devices of the novel leading toward its theme. As shown above, the painting and calligraphic works in 『The Dream of Red Chamber』 enlarge the boundary of novel as they stimulate sensitivity of readers, promote three-dimensional understanding of characters, and expand to the level of theme, instead of being simple redundant techniques.
