국문 초록

조선 후기의 르네상스 지식인 다산 정약용은 천주교 박해 시기에 유배를 당했다. 바닥까지 추락한 지식인이 기약 없는 유배 생활을 견디기란 여간 어려운 일이 아니다. 동서양의 수많은 지식인이 역사의 부침 속에서 어용의 길을 걷거나혹은 자기몰락의 유혹에 빠지는 경우를 우리는 종종 보았다. 하지만 다산은 지조 있는 학자로서 무려 18년의 유배 생활을 용케 견뎌냈다. 이 글에서는 그 밑힘의 하나로 ‘차’를 꼽는다. 다산은 유배지에서 차를 통해 폭넓은 교우 관계를 맺으며 학문의 지평을 넓혔다. 여기에는 혜장, 초의와 같은 불교 승려도 당연히 포함된다. ‘척불숭유’를 기치로 한 조선 사회에서 사대부의 이런 일탈은 안전한 선택이 아님에도, 다산은 이에 아랑곳없이 우정과 환대의 공동체를 꾸렸다. 한미한 집안 출신의 제자인 치원 황상과 더불어 차와 공부를 매개로 사제지간 이상의 정을 나눈 데서 계급을 가로지르는 다산의 자유로운 면모를 보게 된다.

영문 초록

Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, the well-known intellectual in the late Chosun dynasty, was exiled while the Catholic was prosecuted. It’s never easy for an intellectual who plunged to the bottom to endure the banishment which seemed endless. We frequently saw that lots of intellectual, whether they were westerners or easterners, often felt into the temptations of collapsing themselves or of government patronized in the history. Nevertheless, Dasan passed through successfully the 18 years of exile as the sincere and earnest scholar. This paper identified ‘tea life’ as one of his strengths to put up with every hardship. Dasan expanded his academic horizon by building up a wide range of friendly relations through having and sharing a tea in the times of exile. His friendly relations are extended even to the Buddhist monks including Hyejang and Choui. Such deviation from the banner of ‘rejecting Buddhism and respecting Confucianism’ was never desirable. Dasan, however, established the community of friendship and hospitality to break down social customs. Furthermore, Dasan and his disciple Chiwon Hwang Sang, who was from humble and poor family, strengthened the life-long affection beyond the relationship between a teacher and a student, which indicated Dasan’s generous attitude which never minded social ranks. In these senses, this paper suggests that Dasan was filled with the spirit of ‘Homo ludens’ and really no shortage of being called as the Renaissance intellectual.
