국문 초록

대한제국 시기부터 일제강점기를 거쳐 광복에 이르는 기간 동안 발행된 근대잡지 창간호 100종을 분석한 결과, 표지디자인의 특성을 통해 다음과 같은 점을확인할 수 있었다. 인쇄매체 자체가 매우 귀했던 1890∼1900년대에 발행된 잡지의 표지 이미지를 장식했던 것은 태극기와 한반도의 지도 이미지였다. 이 같은 이미지가 잡지표지에 실림으로써 애국적 열정을 불러일으키는 도구로 활용되었다. 또한, 국민으로서의 개인보다 국가를 중요하게 여겼던 시대에 최초로 신문관의 잡지 표지는 서구의 디자인 양식을 들여와 응용하는 새로운 감각을 보여주었다. 1920년대 잡지계를 주도한 개벽사가 발행한 잡지 표지에는 여성과 아동의 이미지가 새로운 모습으로 등장하였으며, 1930년대의 시사종합잡지들은 식민지 조선을 이끌남성주체를 내세워 독자들을 계몽하고자 다양한 이미지를 표지에 실었다. 1940 년대에는 일제의 탄압에 굴복하여 친일을 선동하는 이미지가 담긴 표지의 잡지가 다수 생겨났다. 그 밖에 순수문학을 추구했던 문예동인지들은 표지와 본문에동인으로 참여한 화가의 삽화가 실리는 등 문예동인지의 편집디자인은 소박하면서도 참여 동인들의 역량을 모아 편집을 완성함으로써 또 다른 특성을 보여주었다. 이처럼 근대잡지의 표지에서는 근대인들이 꿈꾸었던 주체를 표현하기 위해 만들어진 다양한 이미지들과 함께 당대의 감각을 뛰어넘는 새로운 디자인 형식을찾아볼 수 있었다. 결국 우리 근대잡지들은 일제강점기라는 어려운 시기를 극복하고 우리 말과 글 그리고 민족정신을 지켜낸 중요한 매체였다

영문 초록

As a result of analyzing 100 kinds of modern magazines published during the period from the Korean Empire through Japanese colonial era to liberation, the following points were confirmed through the characteristics of the cover design. It was the Taegeukgi and map images of the Korean Peninsula that decorated the cover image of a magazine published in the 1890s and 1900s, when the printing media itself was very precious. Such an image was used as a tool to arouse patriotic passion by appearing on the cover of a magazine. In addition, for the first time in an era when the state was considered more important than an individual as a citizen, the magazine cover of the Sinmunguan showed a new sense of introducing and applying Western design styles. Images of women and children appeared in new forms on the cover of a magazine published by Gaebyeoksa, who led the magazine world in the 1920s, and in the 1930s, current affairs magazines put various images on the cover to enlighten readers by promoting male subjects to lead colonial Joseon. In the 1940s, a number of magazines on the cover containing images of inciting pro-Japanese by succumbing to the oppression of Japanese imperialism were created. In addition, literature magazine, who pursued pure literature, showed another characteristic by completing the editing by combining the capabilities of the participating drivers while simple, with illustrations from painters who participated as drivers on the cover and body.
