무엇이 사회복지학과 대학생들을 ‘그들답게’ 하는가?

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 특정 집단의 성질과 구조, 작동 기제를 이해하는 데에 있어 Bourdieu의 아비투스 개념이 지닌 유용성을 참작하여, 사회복지학과 대학생들을 ‘그들답게’ 보이게 하는 인식과 행위, 경험과 지향점이 어떠한 특성과 양태인지 구체적으로 탐구했다. 자료수집을 위해 사회복지학과에 재학 중인 대학생 남녀 6명과 심층면담을 하였고, 이를 질적 사례연구 방법으로 분석했다. 연구결과, 연구참여자들의 일상적 맥락 전반에서 그들만의 아비투스에 따른 고유성이 드러났고, 이는 18개 범주 및 5개 상위범주와 함께 밝혀졌다. 특히 상위범주는 ‘주변 사람들 만류에도 남 돕고자 선택한 사회복지’, ‘사회복지학도의 꿈 끌어내리는 사회구조 속 지위’, ‘사회복지의 이상과 실제 저울질하기’, ‘사회복지를 둘러싼 겹겹의 장에서 쟁취하는 역량’, ‘어두운 내일에도 사회복지로 빛 밝힐 포부 좇기’와 같았다. 또한, 연구참여자들의 경험에서 ‘가치 지향과 현실 고민 넘나들며 키우는 사회복지 전문성’이라는 핵심주제를 찾아냈다. 끝으로, 본고에서 새롭게 발견한 점들에 기반을 두어 사회복지학과 대학생들의 전공 탐구에의 수월성 증대와 사회복지 전문성 향상, 그리고 건강한 발달 지원을 위해 몇 가지 논의점을 제시했다.

영문 초록

In this study, we specifically explored the characteristics and aspects of perceptions, actions, experiences, and orientations that make college students majoring in social welfare ‘look like one,’ considering the usefulness of Bourdieu’s concept of habitus in understanding the character, structures and mechanisms of operation of a certain group. For data collection, in-depth interviews were conducted with 6 male and female college students majoring in social welfare and were analyzed with the qualitative case study method. As a result, their peculiarity of habitus was revealed in research participants’ overall everyday contexts, and this was identified with 18 categories and 5 Upper categories. Especially, Upper categories included ‘social work chosen to help others despite opposition from others,’ ‘position in the social structure that drags down the dream of the student of social welfare,’ ‘weighing the ideals and practices of social work,’ ‘competency won on the fields surrounding social welfare,’ and ‘chasing an ambition to shed light even though the tomorrow will be dark.’ Furthermore, in the experiences of the study participants, the essential theme, ‘expertise in social work developed crossing over between value orientation and reality concerns’ was found. Lastly, based on these new findings, this study proposed some discussion points to improve excellence in the exploration of major studies and social welfare expertise by students in the social welfare department, and to support their healthy development.
