韓譯本《텬로력뎡》의 토착화 번역양상 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 한역본 《텬로력뎡》의 散文을 연구 대상으로 하여 토착화 번역 양상 및 특징을 전반적이고 총체적으로 고찰하고자 한다. 한역본 《텬로력뎡》에 나오는 160개의 인명과 지명은 대다수가 중역본과 관화역본의 인명과 지명을 한글음독하여 同話翻譯과 異話翻譯으로 표기되었다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 또한 게일 자신이 직접 개명하거나 작명한 부분도 있음을 발견하였다. 게일은 인명과 지명을 보다 완성된 토착화 책략을 구현해 내기 위해서 조선소설의 형식에 없는 서문에 해설해 주는 독특한 방식을 사용하였다. 한역본 산문의 내용구성 양상에 있어서는 관화역본과 문언역본의 단어, 문장 등이 한역본 산문의 내용 구성에 영향을 미쳤다는 사실을 발견하였을 뿐만 아니라 한역본의 저본인 세권의 텍스트 즉 영어원작, 문언역본, 관화역본의 내용들이 융합되어 구성되었다는 것을 알게 되었다. 게일은 세 가지 기술적 번역을 통해서 한역본 《텬로력뎡》의 토착화 번역책략을 완성했는데 그 첫째가 削除현상이고, 둘째가 添加현상이며, 셋째가 게일 자신의 創作현상이라는 것을 발견하였다. 게일이 《텬로력뎡》의 散文에 나오는 인명과 지명, 구성, 내용 등을 조선의 소설 형식에 맞추어 번역한 것은 조선의 평민들이 쉽게 수용할 수 있도록 한 성공적인 토착화 번역책략이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspects and characteristics of inculturation translation in general and holistically by studying the prose of the Korean version of the Tyeon Ro Ryeok Dyeong. Most of the 160 human names and place names appearing in the Korean version of the Pilgrim’s Progress is translated from the Chinese Version, the Mandarin Dialect Version that translated by reading them into Korean as same word and different words translations. In addition, it was found that Gail himself changed or renamed some parts of the names. Gale used a unique method of expounding human names and place names in the introduction, which is not in the form of Choseon Dynasty novels, in order to realize a more complete inculturation strategy. In terms of the content composition of the Korean version of the prose, I found that it was affected by the Chinese Written Language version and Mandarin Dialect version in its words, and the sentences. In addition, it was found that the texts of the three books, the original English Version, the Chinese Written Language version, and the Mandarin Dialect version, were fused. Gale completed the inculturation translation strategy of the Korean version of Tyeon Ro Ryeok Dyeong through three technical translations. The first is the phenomenon of elimination, the second is addition and the third is Gale’s own creation. The prose of the Tyeon Ro Ryeok Dyeong were due to Gale’s successful inculturation translation strategy to translate the names of people and place, composition, and contents according to the form of a Choseon Dynasty novel that can be easily accepted by the Korean people of that time.
