‘재현하지 않고 재현하는’ 백인성의 자장과 한흑갈등

국문 초록

본 논문은 뉴욕과 로스앤젤레스를 배경으로 미국 대도시 내에서 발생한 유색인종 간의 소요 사태를 다룬 『식료품점』과 『너의 집이 대가를 치를 것이다』를 자본과 계급 갈등의 관점에서 다루며, 갈등의 근원에 백인성의 헤게모니가 작동하고 있다는 주장을 펼친다. 이를 위해 각 작품의 모티브가 된 뉴욕 한인 상점 불매운동 사건과 LA 폭동으로 가시화된 미국 대도시 내 한흑갈등의 계보와 지형도를 먼저 살핀다. 또한 갈등의 공통 원인을 경제적 계층 차이에서 비롯하는 것으로 이해하고 이를 뒷받침하기 위해 사회학적 논의를 경유한다. 본격적인 작품 분석에서는 『식료품점』의 주인공의 삶을 지배하는 불안과 단절이 백색 이미지로 가득한 악몽을 통해 그려진다고 해석하면서 한흑갈등의 현장에 부재하는 백색/인은 주인공은 물론이거니와 미국 내 다른 유색인 혹은 이민자들의 삶을 강력히 지배하고 있음을 밝힌다. 한편 『너의 집이 대가를 치를 것이다』 또한 도시 내 소요 사태로 인해 불타오르는 도시 전경과 정부 기관의 침묵을 대비적으로 보여줌으로써 백인들의 헤게모니가 한흑갈등에 깊이 작동하고 있음을 노골적으로 보여준다고 분석한다. 이러한 독해를 통해 보이지 않지만 강력하게 존재하는 백인성의 자장에 대항하는 방식에 대해 생각하는 기회를 갖고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses The Fruit ‘N Food and Your House Will Pay, novels about disturbances between minority immigrants in New York and Los Angeles, arguing that hegemony of Whiteness is working at the root of the conflict. This paper examines the genealogy and topographic map revealed by the boycott of Korean stores in New York and the LA riots, motifs of each novel. In addition, this paper refers to sociological discussions to understand that the cause of the disturbance in each city stems from differences in economic class. The anxiety and alienation that dominates Tom s life, the protagonist of The Fruit ‘N Food, is revealed through nightmares filled with white images. But, on the other hand, the Whiteness that is not present in the scene of the Korean-Black conflict strongly dominates the lives of different people of colour or immigrants in the United States and Tom. Meanwhile, Your House Will Pay, also explicitly shows that the hegemony is working intensely on the Korean-Black conflict by contrasting the burnt-out Los Angeles due to urban unrest and the silence of government agencies. By analyzing The Fruit ‘N Food and Your House Will Pay from the perspective of capital and class conflict, this study will open the way to counter the exertion of Whiteness, which has an invisible but powerful impact.
