영문 초록

This paper is to reveal the meaning of imagery in LeRoi Jones’ Dutchman. LeRoi Jones has been regarded as a controversial writer in American literature since 1960s when he was staging his major plays. Dutchman is full of many images and symbols about main characters, dramatic background, and situations. The underground setting of the play recalls the slave ship and this image is reinforced by the title itself; the first African slaves were brought to America by Dutch slave traders. Dutchman centers around two characters, a black man, Clay, and a white woman, Lula, on a subway. Clay is identified with Adam, and Uncle Tom. Lula is Eve and is also associated with a witch woman and manhunter. Clay and Lula are not the unique individuals but archetypal figures. The action of Dutchman is regarded as symbolic and ritualistic rather than realistic. LeRoi Jones tries to fashion the devil image to subvert racial myth that has made racism against the black people in his play.
