국문 초록

주체-객체 혹은 정신-몸만큼이나 강력하게 우리 마음속에 각인된 이분법의 프레임은 능동-수동의 관계일 것이다. 문제는 사회가 조장하는 능동성이 매우 긍정적인 어떤 것으로 우리에게 내면화되면서 수동성은 반대로 늘 패배적이고 부정적인 것으로 여겨져 왔다는 것이다. 그러나 쿠다는 T. S. 엘리어트, W. B. 예이츠, V. 울프나 토마스 만 같은 20세기 모더니즘 작가들이 사실은 이미 이러한 능동-수동의 이분법을 해체하고 있다고 주장한다. 『모더니즘의 정념』에서 쿠다는 일반적으로 남녀 사이의 휘몰아치는 사랑이나 어떤 대상에 대한 격렬한 감정 정도로 사용되어온 영어의 ‘정념’을 매우 확장적인 의미로 사용한다. 쿠다에 따르면, 정념은 최근에서야 단어의 의미로 폭넓게 자리 잡은 ‘격렬한 감정’의 의미보다 ‘겪다’(to suffer) 혹은 ‘사로잡히다’(to be moved)를 의미하는 라틴어 패씨오(passio)에서 유래되었다. 어떤 상태를 ‘견디거나’ 감정에 ‘사로잡히는’ 정념의 근본 성격이 수동성이라면, 이는 지금까지 인간의 의식에서 강조되어온 ‘행위자’로서의 주체의 능동성과 반대되는 개념이다. 최근 들어서 인간을 이해하는 데 정념과 수동성이 부각되는 이유는, 능동-수동의 이분법을 해체할 필요와 함께, 인간이 우리가 믿어온 것처럼 과연 그렇게 능동적인 존재인가에 대한 의구심 때문이다. 오히려 인간은 능동적이기보다 수동적인 상태로 대부분의 일상을 보내는 존재가 아닌가. 이러한 질문에 대해 울프의 에세이들과 소설은 중요한 단서들을 제공한다. 본 논문은 그동안 당연하게 여겨왔던 능동-수동의 이분법을 걷어내고 수동의 의미를 재고해 봄으로써 울프의 소설 『댈러웨이 부인』 과 에세이가 어떤 측면에서 인간에 대한 새로운 이해를 가능하게 했는지 탐구해 볼 것이다.

영문 초록

The binarist frame imprinted in our minds as strongly as subject-object or mind-body would be the active-passive dichotomy. Even in the 21st century, capitalist society still emphasizes and injects the active and independent will of individuals. The problem is that as the activity promoted by society is internalized as something very positive, passivity has always been considered denigrated and negative. But Anthony Cuda argues in The Passions of Modernism that 20th century modernist writers such as T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, V. Woolf and Thomas Mann are in fact already dismantling this active-passive dichotomy. According to Cuda, passion comes from the Latin word passio, which means ‘to suffer’ or ‘to be moved’, rather than a ‘vehement feeling’ for an object, which has only recently become widely established as a meaning of the word. Cuda argues that to fully understand humans we need to reconsider a human being as ‘to be moved,’ opposed to the traditional understanding as ‘the mover’ or an agent. The reason why passion and passivity has recently emerged in understanding humans comes from doubts about whether humans are such active beings as we have believed in. Rather, aren’t human beings spending most of their daily lives in a passive state rather than active? Wolf s essays and novels provide important clues to these questions. By calling into question the active-passive dichotomy that has been taken for granted, and by rethinking the meanings of passion and passivity, this paper will explore in what ways Woolf s novel Mrs. Dalloway and essays have enabled a new understanding of humans.
