조선후기 역관 아전 계층의 사회와 문화

국문 초록

본고는 정치가이자 문인이며 학자였던 조선조 사대부들이 자신의 생활 주변에서 기억할 만한, 그리고 기억해야할 필요가 있었던 일화와 사회제도를 수록한 필기의 기록 문학적 성격에 주목하였다. 이와 함께 상층 문화와 생활에서 시야를 넓혀 기층 백성들의 생활과 사회 변화에 대한 관심을 통해 조선중기 이후 서사적 성향이 강화된 야담도 관심의 대상이다. 이들 필기와 야담집은 기본적으로 사회의 다양한 계층을 통해 구전되면서 ‘문학적 진실성과 사회적 현실성’을 담아내기 마련이다. 이때 필자는 근원사실로부터 구체화된 이야기들이 조선조 사회를 살아 간 민인들의 현실 감각의 반영태이며, 민간의 설화적 상상력을 가미한 자료 역시 사회적 여건과 정황이 개입됨에 주목하고자 한다. 다만 기록, 혹은 이야기 문학에 담긴 사회적·현실적 실상과 그 반영태를 어떻게 보다 정밀하게 해석하여 유의미한 자료로 구성하는가에 관건이 달려있다. 이에 그 하나의 시도로 中人 계층에 주목해 보았다. 특히 역관과 함께 아전 계층이 그 주요 관심의 대상이다. 이들은 중앙과 지방 행정의 실질적 사무를 담당한 주체로서 법전을 통해 사회적 존재 양태를 재구할 수도 있다. 그러나 성문법상의 아전들의 존재 양식과 달리 사회 현실에서 구체화된 이들의 모습과 관습법적 생활 방식의 구체적 면모는 아직도 확인해야 할 부분이 많다. 이 점에서 필기와 야담집은 법적 테두리 안에 규정된 중인들의 보다 실질적인 생활 관습과 면모를 말해주는 의미있는 자료들이다. 본고는 이들 계층에 대한 매우 단편적이거나 사소한 정보에 접근해 보았다. 하지만 이는 문학적 자료를 역사와 사회적 측면에서 읽어 봄으로써 사회제도의 실질적, 혹은 관습적 작동 과정을 재구성해 보려는 시도의 첫걸음이며, 이후 다양한 방면으로 확대되길 기대한다.

영문 초록

The present study paid attention to the nature of documentary literature of Pilgi that Sadaebu who were politicians, men of letters and scholars in the Joseon Dynasty recorded social institutions and anecdotes which were worthy of being remembered and necessary to be remembered around their lives. Additionally, we were also focusing on Yadam in which an epic tendency was strengthened after the middle of the Joseon Dynasty through having an interest in ordinary people s lives and social change broadening their mental vision beyond the culture and life of the upper classes. While basically these Pilgi and Yadam books were handed down by tradition through a variety of classes of society it is certain that they came to reflect ‘the literary truth and social realities.’ At this time the author of this paper is to pay attention to the fact that stories embodied from original facts are reflections of a sense of reality by people who lived in society of the Joseon Dynasty, and that social conditions and circumstances were involved also in materials in which the folk s narrative imagination was added. But the question is how to compose them as significant data interpreting the reflections and the social and actual state contained in records or narrative literature in more detail. As a result, we took note of the middle class as an attempt. Especially, official aides as well as interpreters are the object of main attention. They can reorganize social existence features through a code as main agents responsible for practical work in the central and local administration. However, in comparison with the way official aides existed according to the written law the actual features embodied in social reality and concrete aspects of their lifestyle according to the common law should be found out still in many parts. In this respect Pilgi and Yadam books are significant materials of indicating more practical customs and features of their lives in relation to the people from the middle class defined within the legal limit. The current paper approached very fragmentary or minor information on the class. Nevertheless, this is the first step of an attempt to reconstitute the practical or conventional mechanism of social systems by reading literary materials from the perspective of history and society, and we expect it to be expanded to a variety of areas.
