龜峯 宋翼弼의 예 담론과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고는 조선 중기 예학자인 龜峯 宋翼弼(1534~1599)의 예담론의 특징과 그 의미를 살펴보기 위하여 시도되었다. 이러한 작업은 예담론을 통해 16세기 후반의 사회문화적인 흐름과 그 시대를 살다간 지식인의 사유를 읽어낼 수 있는 한 단서가 될 수 있다는 전제를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 귀봉은 서류라는 신분적 한계에도 불구하고, 李珥, 成渾을 비롯한 사대부들과 함께 예학에서 중심적인 역할을 담당하였다. 그의 예 담론은 기본적으로 ꡔ가례ꡕ, 및 고례의 철저하게 준수하고자 한 것이기에, 이에 시변에 따른 융통성은 다른 예학자들에 비해 결여된 편이다. 시변의 중요성은 인식하고 있음에도 기존의 예법을 수정하는 데에는 소극적인 태도를 보였다. 그의 견고한 예론은 예와 情과의 갈등에서, 예를 통해 私情을 단속하려는 데에서 다시 확인된다. 이러한 귀봉의 예담론의 성격은 율곡, 우계와 진행되었던 서모 논쟁을 통해서 분명하게 표출된다. 율곡은 情理에 기반하여 主婦보다도 서모의 위치를 앞에 두려고 한 반면, 귀봉은 ꡔ가례ꡕ 및 고례에 기반하여 비첩의 위치에 둘 것을 주장하였다. 하지만, 이러한 주장 가운데에, 오히려 첩자는 부계 혈통 내로 유입시키고자 하여 흥미로운 지점을 보였다. 이처럼 적서에 대한 대우가 처첩과 아들에서 달리한 것은, 종통을 모계가 아닌 부계에 중심으로 고착화시킴으로써 서자를 出系의 범주 안에 집어넣고자 한 것으로 보인다. 이러한 배타적이고도 견고한 예 담론을 통해 그는 모순적으로 (올바르지 않은 방향으로) 견고해지는 계급사회에 대한 비판을 할 수 있었으며, 자신의 신분을 넘어 가정뿐 아니라 사회에서도 은밀하게 존재하는 종통에, 스스로를 확립시키는 것이 가능하게 되었다.

영문 초록

This Paper was attempted to study the ritual discourse of Gubong Song Ik-pil and it s sense. This work presuppose that it might be a clue to understand the culture of the latter half of the 16th and the intellectual of the day. In spite of the lowly social position, Gubong played an important role in ritual thought with the gentry including YI YI , Seong Hwon. Basically, his ritual discourse observed Chi Si Family ritual and old rites. Thus, comparing with other intellectuals, he was lacking in flexibility to adapt to changing times. He recognized the rite was not inexorable, of course, but, he was negativity to rectify the existing rites. He s strong discourse is reaffirmed, when he put rite before human feeling. This ritual discourse of Gubong expressed clearly through the argument of the father´s concubine between YI YI. While YI YI argued father´s concubine should stand in the first line of the women during ancestor worship ceremonies, Gubong maintained that she should treated as a slave concubine based on Chi Si Family ritual and old rites. However it s interesting that, he wanted to let the child born of a concubine join in the paternal family, arguing this matter. Discriminating between the child born of a concubine and the concubine, was intended to establish not the maternal family but the paternal family. Paradoxically speaking, through exclusive and strong discourse, he can criticise hardening hierarchical society and let himself join in the paternal family.
