This article approaches the position of the Hanmun(漢文) subject course in Korea using the concept of course. A course is a educational subject at school, which is closely related to the nation’s educational purposes and processes. The nation’s educational purposes decide the educational processes and the existence of educational subjects, and the Hanmun(漢文) subject course is a liberal arts, general, and professional subject, considering the historical and social position of Korea. Historically viewed and considering the present classification of studies, Hanmun(漢文) is not only related to certain parts of particular subjects. Although the degree of the relation may be different for each subjects, it is related to all other areas except for practical courses such as science, mathematics, technologies or foreign languages. Also, considering the present condition of social language, in which the Korean language uses a lot of words what composed chinese characters, it may even be a practical course. After all, Hanmun(漢文) is a general and overall course which cannot be dichotomized between a liberal arts course and a professional course, or between a tool course and a non-tool course. In other words, Hanmun(漢文) is a basic liberal arts subject which is like a tool course, and is also a liberal arts course which is like a non-tool course. At the same time, it is a specialized course that eventually leads to professional education. Of course, some professional fields have both professional and non-professional elements merged together. However, such fields usually distinguish the main and the secondary clearly, unlike Hanmun(漢文). Hanmun(漢文) Education Studies is what investigates such characteristics of Hanmun(漢文) subject, arranges its characteristics and contents, and systematizes it. It is a theoretical and empirical approach to the interaction between the course, teachers, and students in the education of Hanmun(漢文). It is also a systematic approach to why-what, when-how much-how and who about teaching at actual schools. Here, Hanmun(漢文) Education Studies is an overall, applicable modern science that combines the unique characteristics of both education studies and Hanmun(漢文) itself, and that further concludes new course purposes, contents, systems, methods, and evaluation. Hanmun(漢文) Education Studies is generally divided into Chinese writing education, Chinese vocabulary education and Chinese characters education. These three fields are organically linked and may decide that one field is a basic and practicing level to proceed to another. However, there is no perfect successive order as 1-2-3. Instead, it has a combined form of contents. Moreover, the range of contents to educate should be decided for each educational object. In this classification process, the cognitive and definitive level of a student should be considered, and this organizes the contents of the education. Also, the degree of difficulty may decide primary, intermediate, and advanced levels. For these reasons, Hanmun( 漢文) Education Studies is expressed as an applicable and overall course that organizes and systematizes many basic studies. Although it might seem relatively late compared to other education studies, it bears much potential for development. Further research will be needed in ways that dismiss the traditional dichotomy between educational contents theories and instruction education theories, and that generally considers and organizes education contents, systems, instruction methods, and evaluation for different educational objects. This article has been written based on such ideas, and it will be the foundation of investigation that the present writer will keep interested in and further research.
