국문 초록

우리나라는 중국과의 사대외교를 통해 동아시아의 일원으로 자리 잡고 있었다. 이러한 국제적 정황은 외교를 위한 ‘通事’ 즉 역관 양상을 필수적으로 요구하였다. 따라서 역관 양성을 위한 제도적 장치를 마련해야 했고, 한어학습을 위한 역학서가 절실하였다. 고려시기 『老乞大』·『朴通事』, 『조선의』 『訓世評話』·『伍倫全備』는 그 대표적 예이다. 여기서 이들 譯學書의 성립에는 시대적 요구에 따른 변천과 함께 일정한 연관 관계가 감지된다. 특히 역학서에 소설이 연계되고 있어 소설사의 측면에서 주목할 만하다. 『박통사』와 『훈세평화』에는 각각 『西遊記』와 『剪燈新話』의 한 대목이, 『오륜전비』는 희곡 그 자체로 수용된 때문이다. 역학서는 생활 언어 습득이라는 특성상 일상의 상황을 설정해야 했으며, 『박통사』는 이점에서 오랜 기간 학습서로 애호되었다. 이때 소설은 ‘일상성’과 ‘구어체’가 활용되어 역학서의 성격에 부합한 것이다. 하지만 조선의 경우에는 이를 인정하면서도 교화적 성격을 중시하였다. 『훈세평화』는 바로 이점이 감안된 교재이며, 당시 『전등신화』의 ｢愛卿傳｣ 또한 ‘대중성’과 ‘교훈성’을 인정받았다. 여기서 『오륜전비』는 오륜전·오륜비 형제의 효성을 다룬 ‘교훈성’과 함께 일상 생활언어인 白話로 구성된 완결된 이야기 구조가 갖춰져 ‘서사성’에의 긍정을 이루었다. 이처럼 역학서는 역관 양성의 필요성, 국가 차원의 요구, 중국 사회에 익숙한 역관 등이 이룬 결과물이며, 소설은 이에 부응해 그 한 몫을 차지한 것이다.

영문 초록

Chosun was placed as a member of East Asia through the submissive diplomacy toward China. Such international situation necessarily required the cultivation of ‘Tongsas,’ i.e. interpreters for diplomatic activities. Thus, the state should prepare systematic measures to cultivate interpreters, and desperately needed translation books. Nogeoldae and Baktongsa in Goryeo, and Hunsepyeonghwa and Oryunjeonbi in Chosun are representative examples. Here, we feel that there would have been certain interrelationships along with changes triggered by the demands of the times in the establishment of such translation books. In particular, the translation books are worth noticing on the side of the history of novels because they were connected to novels. Baktongsa and Hunsepyenghwa contain parts of Seoyugi and Jeondeungsinhwa, and Oryunjeonbi the play itself. The translation books should set situations in everyday life due to their purpose to acquire colloquial languages, and Baktongsa had been loved in this respect for a long time. Thus, novels conformed to the properties of the translation books since they were equipped with ‘routineness’ and ‘narratives.’ However, while admitting it, Chosun took instructional properties to be important. Hunsepyeonghwa is the very textbook taking account of this point, and Aegyeongjeon in Jeondeungsinhwa was also recognized for its ‘popularity’ and ‘morality.’ Oryunjeonbi bore ‘practicality’ to the effect that it was constructed in written colloquial Chinese, an actual colloquial language, as well as ‘morality.’ As such, the translation books were resulted from the necessity of the cultivation of interpreters, the state s requirement, and the endeavor of interpreters familiar with Chinese society, and novels played a role to conform to this situation.
