백제의 남방 확장과 가야 접경의 변화

국문 초록

고대 국가로서 백제의 성장은 남·북의 두 방향으로 이루어졌다. 북으로는 고구려의 남하를 제어하 고, 남으로는 마한의 복속과 동남쪽의 가야를 관통하여 왜국까지 연결하는 것이었다. 따라서 백제의 성장에서 가야와의 관계를 파악하는 것은 단순한 경계선의 확인을 넘어 양국의 협력과 반목에 따른 상호 영향이라는 측면에서도 중요한 문제이다. 기록 상 1~3세기 백제와 가야는 직접적으로 국경을 마주하지 않는다. 4세기 중엽에 이르러서야 백 제가 남방 정벌이라는 형태로 가야와 관련을 맺는다. 그러나 근초고왕 이전까지 백제의 경계가 금강 이남에서 만경강 일대의 전북 지역 일부에 한정되는 점으로 보면 낙동강 중·하류의 가야와는 남과 북 의 횡렬적인 접촉이 이루어졌다. 이처럼 백제가 직접적인 접경과 무관함에도 가야에 관심을 둔 이유는 백제-가야-왜로 이어지는 교 역의 연결 때문이다. 따라서 4세기 백제와 가야의 관계는 직접적인 접경을 이루지 못했음도 불구하고 이후 백제가 갖는 남방 지역 연고권의 시발점으로서 중요하다. 그러나 백제의 가야 지역에 대한 영향 력 확보는 고구려와 전면전이 지속된 결과 유지하지 못하였다. 그리고 백제는 웅진 천도 이후인 동성왕(479∼501) 시기에 다시 가야에 대한 관심을 보였다. 하지만 대외적으로 한성 함락 이후 지속적인 고구려의 남진 시도에 대응하고, 대내적으로는 대기근·도적 발 생·전염병 창궐 등의 재해가 이어져 집중하지 못했다. 오히려 백제의 남방 진출 의지는 가야와의 관계 에 파열음을 촉발해 신라에 접근하게 만들었다. 6세기의 무령왕 때에 이르러 백제는 가야와의 접경 지역에 적극적으로 진출하기에 이른다. 가야 지 역 백제민에 대한 호구 파악으로 외곽[현읍]의 영역 편입과 지배를 시도하고, 임나 4현을 공략, 기문과 대사 획득 등으로서 백제는 남원으로부터 하동에 이르는 섬진강 전 유역을 영역화하여 서와 동의 종 렬적인 가야 접경을 이루게 된다.

영문 초록

As an ancient nation, Baekje s growth took place in two directions: north and south. To the north, Goguryeo controlled the south, to the south was the subjugation of Mahan, and to the southeast, it passed through Gaya and connected to the Wae. Therefore, understanding the relationship with Gaya in the growth of Baekje is an important issue in terms of mutual influence due to cooperation and antagonism between the two countries beyond the simple identification of boundaries. According to records, Baekje and Gaya in the 1st and 3rd centuries do not directly face borders. It was not until the middle of the 4th century that Baekje was associated with Gaya in the form of southern conquest. However, considering that the boundary of Baekje was limited to a part of Jeollabuk-do from the south of the Geum River to the Mangyeong River before King Geunchogo, the north-south contact was made with Gaya in the middle and lower reaches of the Nakdong River. The reason why Baekje was interested in Gaya even though it had nothing to do with the direct border was because of the link between Baekje-Gaya-Wae trade. Therefore, the relationship between Baekje and Gaya in the 4th century is important as the starting point of the southern region of Baekje afterward, although it did not establish a direct border. However, as a result of the continuous all-out war against Goguryeo, the securing of influence over the Gaya region of Baekje could not be maintained. Baekje showed interest in Gaya again during the reign of King Dongseong(479-501), after the capital of Ungjin. However, externally, it responded to Goguryeo s continued attempts to advance south after the fall of Hanseong, and internally, disasters such as great famine, robbery, and epidemics continued, so it was difficult to concentrate. Rather, Baekje s will to advance south triggered a rupture in the relationship with Gaya, making Gaya approach Silla. By the time of King Muryeong in the 6th century, Baekje actively advanced into the border area with Gaya. Attempts to incorporate and dominate the territory of the outskirts of Gaya[hyeon-eup] by grasping the hogu of Baekje people in the Gaya region, By attacking the 4 prefectures of Imna and acquiring Kimun and Daesa, etc., Baekje territorialized the entire Seomjin River from Namwon to Hadong, forming a border with Gaya, which is a vertical line between West and East.
