국문 초록

본 연구는 대한제국 전기에 간행된 양잠서적의 분석을 통해 이 시기 양잠기술의 도입과 발전과정에 대해서 검토한 글이다. 대한제국기에 들어서 일본 유학생 출신들이 당시 일본에서 주목을 받았던 인공양잠법을 국내에 도입하기 위한 시도가 본격적으로 진행되었다. 농상공부 산하에 잠업과와 잠업과시험장이 설치되어 인공양잠법의 도입과 전파과정에서 중심 역할을 수행하였다. 이에 따라 잠업과시험장에서는 다양한 양잠서적을 간행 배포하였는데, 이 서적들은 대부분 인공양잠법에 기반하고 있었다. 하지만 인공양잠법은 원래 리스크가 큰 사육법이었기 때문에 등장 초기부터 많은 비판이 제기되고 있었다. 잠업과시험장에서도 이러한 문제점을 파악하고 있었기 때문에 시간이 지나면서 어린누에는 인공육으로 기르고 큰누에는 천연육으로 기르는 일종의 ‘혼합육’을 모색해 나갔다. 이러한 기술개량은 잠업과시험장에서 자체적으로 양잠인력을 양성하고 실험과 연구를 거듭하고 있었기 때문에 가능한 일이었다. 대한제국에 충분한 시간이 주어진다면 외부로부터 도입된 인공양잠기술을 토착화하여 발전시켜 갈 가능성이 높았음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the introduction and development of sericulture technologies through an analysis of the sericulture books that were published during the early Daehan Empire period. During the early Daehan Empire period, Koreans who had studied in Japan attempted to introduce the artificial sericulture method, which had been popularized in Japan. The Department of Sericulture and the Experimental Station of the Department of Sericulture [hereafter, ESDS] were organized under the Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce, and Industry [Nongsanggongbu], and played an important role in the process of introducing and disseminating the sericulture technologies. Accordingly, the ESDS published various sericulture books but these books were mostly based on the artificial sericulture method. However, the artificial sericulture method had received heavy criticism from the time of its development because it was a highly risky breeding method. The ESDS was also aware of this problem and so over time, pursued the “mixed breeding” approach of raising small silkworms by artificial sericulture and raising big silkworms by natural sericulture. This type of technological improvement was made possible by the independent training of sericulture personnel and repeated experiments and research at the ESDS. This shows that given enough time, the potential fully existed for the artificial sericulture technology introduced from Japan to have been localized and developed further in the Daehan Empire.
