텃밭 가꾸기 중심의 환경 교육 프로그램이 초등학생의 환경 감수성에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구는 텃밭 가꾸기 중심의 환경 교육 프로그램이 초등학생의 환경 감수성에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고자 한 것으로 제주특별자치도 제주시 읍면지역에 소재하고 있는 D초등학교 3학년 학생 13명을 대상으로 하였다. 2021년 3월 10일부터 4월 30일까지 총 2개월에 걸쳐 텃밭 일구기를 시작으로 모종 심기, 물주기, 식물 관찰하기 등의 텃밭 가꾸기 활동을 하였다. 그리고 ‘건강한 흙, 소중한 물, 깨끗한 공기, 함께 라서 아름다운 우리’라는 4개의 주제로 환경 교육 프로그램을 16차시 실시하였다. 이상덕(2011)이 사용한 설문지를 이용하여 환경 감수성 검사를 사전․사후 실시하였고, 수집된 자료는 i-Statistics 프로그램으로 대응 표본 t 검정을 실시하여 결과 검증을 하였으며 유의 수준은 p<.05로 설정하였다. 또한 실험 집단 학생들의 생각과 행동의 변화를 분석하기 위하여 텃밭 환경 일기, 행동 관찰, 활동 소감 나누기, 그림 등의 질적 자료도 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개발된 환경 교육 프로그램을 실시한 결과 초등학생의 환경 감수성에 대한 사후 검사 전체의 평균은 4.83으로 사전 검사 점수 전체의 평균 3.89에 비하여 0.94점 높게 나타났으며 유의 수준 p<.05에서 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 환경 감수성의 하위 영역으로는 자연에 대한 관심, 자연과의 접촉, 감정이입, 자연이나 사람과의 상호 작용, 환경 보전하려는 실천 의지가 있는데 모두 p<.05 수준에서 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 학생들의 활동 결과물인 텃밭 환경 일기, 활동 학습지, 그림, 활동 소감에 환경 감수성의 하위 영역인 자연에 대한 관심, 자연과의 접촉, 감정 이입, 자연이나 사람과의 상호 작용, 환경 보전하려는 실천 의지가 잘 나타나 있었다.

영문 초록

To investigate the effect of a vegetable gardening environmental education program on elementary school students’ environmental sensibility, this study was conducted on the thirteen 3rd-grade students of D elementary school located at a suburban village of Jeju Self-governing Province. For nearly over two months from March 10 to April 30, 2021, vegetable gardening activities such as planting saplings, watering and observing plants were carried out starting with raising a mound for the vegetable garden. Then it was followed by 16 sessions of environmental education program under the four themes – healthy earth, precious water, clean air and ‘we belong together’. Pre-and post-environmental sensibility tests were conducted using the questionnaire created by Lee Sang-deok (2011), and the result of the collected data was verified by conducting a paired t-test through i-Statistics program with a significant level of p<.05. Besides, to evaluate the experimental group students’ change in thoughts and behavior, qualitative data including vegetable gardening diary, behavior observation, shared activity impressions, site drawings, etc., were also analyzed. The results of this study are as follows: First, as a result of carrying out this developed environmental education program, the entire average of the elementary school students’ environmental sensibility was 4.83 for posttests, 0.94 higher than 3.89, which was the entire average for pretests, with statistically significant difference at a significant level p<.05. Subareas for environmental sensibility include interest in nature, contact with nature, empathy, interaction with nature or people and practical will toward environmental conservation, all of which had significant difference at p<.05. Second, students’ activity results, such as vegetable garden’s environment diary, activity workbooks, site drawings and activity impressions, well reflected the subareas of environmental sensibility – interest in nature, contact with nature, empathy, interaction with nature or people, and practical will toward environmental conservation.
