국문 초록

세계화에 따른 우리나라 기업들의 활발한 해외 진출과 함께 여성 노동자 고용의 변화도 주목받고 있으나, 아직 국내에서 두 변수의 인과관계를 직접적으로 분석한 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 특히 최근 여성의 경제활동 참여율이 높아지고 있으며, 정부의 중소기업 및 벤처 산업의 지속적인 해외 진출 지원과 기업의 해외로의 사업 확장이 이루어지면서 기업의 해외 진출과 여성 고용 간의 관계는 앞으로의 노동시장에 시사하는 바가 클 것으로 예상된다. 이에 본 연구는 패널분석을 통해 기업들의 해외 진출 및 해외사업 확장에 따른 여성 근로자의 비중 변화를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 기업이 해외 진출을 염두에 두고 있는 단계에서는 근로자의 성별 비중에 변화가 없었으나, 해외 진출을 한 이후에는 여성 근로자의 비중이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 국내 기업들이 해외사업장을 확장하는 단계에서도 여성 근로자의 비중이 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 하지만, 본 연구에서는 국내 기업이 해외로 진출하면서 왜 여성 근로자의 비중이 감소하게 되는지에 대한 세부 이유를 밝히는 데 있어 한계점이 존재한다. 본 연구가 기업의 해외 진출과 여성 고용에 대한 첫 번째 연구라는 점에서 향후 후속 연구를 통한 정책적 제안이 필요하다.

영문 초록

Changes in the employment of female workers are attracting attention along with the active overseas expansion of Korean companies due to globalization, but it is difficult to find a study that analyzes the causal relationship between the two variables. In particular, the participation rate of women in economic activities is increasing recently, and the government’s continuous support for overseas expansion of companies has been growing. Therefore, a study on the relationship between companies’ overseas expansion and women’s employment would provide great implications for the domestic labor market. Accordingly, this study analyzed the change in the proportion of female workers caused by overseas expansion of companies. The empirical analyses using a two-way fixed effect model present that there was no change in the gender ratio of workers at the stage where companies were considering overseas expansion, but the ratio of female workers decreased after overseas expansion. In addition, it was confirmed that the proportion of female workers decreased as when domestic companies were expanding further their overseas business sites. However, this study did not reveal the detailed mechanisms why female employment decreased due to the globalization of domestic companies. Since this study is the first trial on overseas expansion of companies and the female employment policy proposals through further research are needed.
