국문 초록

프룻 챈의 영화 <두리안 두리안>은 그동안 무시되어 온 홍콩의 소수인종 집단을 사실주의적이고 휴머니즘적으로 재현했다고 평가받아 왔다. 이 글은 소수인종을 홍콩 사회의 파레르곤 (parergon)으로 간주하고, 홍콩 영화의 소수인종 재현을 통해 홍콩 문화 정체성에 접근한다. 텍스트 분석 결과, 영화에 대한 기존 연구의 찬미와 달리, 영화 속 소수인종 인물은 야만적이고 폭력적이며 비도덕적인 인물로 재현되고 있으며, 이러한 인물 형상에서 인종주의와 식민주의 징후가 발견된다. 첫째, 영화는 소수인종의 열등한 스테레오타입을 생산함으로써, ‘그들’과의 대비를 통해 ‘우리’의 우월성을 구성한다. 둘째, 영화는 소수인종의 열등성 및 자발성을 부각함으로써, 그들에 대한 홍콩 사회의 문화적 소외, 제도적 배제 및 경제적 착취를 합리화한다. 셋째, 영화는 주권반환 후 홍콩인의 삶이 점점 어려워지는 현실을 파레르곤에 해당하는 소수인종에 의해서도 소외당하는 홍콩 인물을 통해 보여주기 위해, 소수인종 인물을 폭력적이고 비열한 가해자로 재현한다. 마지막으로, 이 영화는 내적으로 소수인종에 대한 오리엔탈리즘적 재현, 외적으로는 국제 영화제의 이데올로기적 호명을 응답하는 셀프-오리엔탈라즘적 텍스트임을 주장하고, 이러한 이중적인 오리엔탈리즘은 영화뿐만 아니라 홍콩 문화 정체성의 일부임을 주장한다.

영문 초록

Fruit Chan’s film Durian Durian has been evaluated as a realistic and humanistic representation of Hong Kong’s minority grou This article regards ethnic minorities as the ‘parergon’ of Hong Kong society and approaches the cultural identity of Hong Kong through the representation of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong films. As a result of text analysis, unlike the praise of previous studies, it was revealed that minority characters are embodied as barbaric, violent, and immoral characters in this movie, and the cause lies in the unconscious racist and colonial ideology of the film. The text analysis results are as follows. Firstly, the film constitutes the superiority of ‘us’ through contrast with ‘they’ by producing inferior stereo types of ethnic minorities. Secondly, the film rationalizes the cultural alienation, institutional exclusion, and economic exploitation of Hong Kong society by highlighting the inferiority and spontaneity of ethnic minorities. Thirdly, the film shows the reality that Hong Kong people’s lives are becoming increasingly difficult after the Handover through Hong Kong characters who are alienated by minorities corresponding to Paregon. To this end, minorities are reproduced as violent and mean perpetrators. Finally, This film is an orientalist text for ethnic minorities and a self-orientalist text that responds to the ideological interpellation of the International Film Festival. This article argues that this dual orientation is part of Hong Kong’s cultural identity as well as movies.
