국문 초록

‘코로나 19’ 위기는 2019년 말 이후 빠르게 확산되면서 인류 사회에 심각한 위기를 야기하고 있다. 이러한 생태계 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 인간의 자연지배나 여기서 비롯된 인간중심주의뿐만 아니라, 자본주의 경제구조의 특징까지 분석할 필요가 있다. 주류경제학은 가격 메커니즘을 통해서 외부효과를 내부화시키면 환경문제가 해결될 수 있다고 믿지만, 경제주의 진보관이나 성장지상주의가 여전히 작동되고 있으므로 생태계 위기에서 벗어나기가 쉽지 않다. 반면에 1973년 불교정신에 바탕을 두고 제안된 슈마허의 불교경제학(Buddhist economics)은 자본주의 사회의 성장지상주의를 비판하면서, 환경파괴나 생태계 위기에서 벗어나기 위한 대안들을 제시한다. 이 때문에, 그의 불교경제학은 녹색경제의 가능성, 환경운동에 대한 철학적・정신적・경제학적 근거를 제공한다고 평가된다. 불교적 관점에서는 인간과 자연을 이분법적으로 구분하지 않는다. 인간의 생존은 자연의 다른 존재들에 의존할 수밖에 없으며, 다른 존재들을 돌보는 일은 곧 나를 포함한 모두의 안전을 위한 전제조건이 된다. 이와 같은 상호의존성(=緣起)에 대한 자각과 함께, 중도(中道)의 개념은 자연에 대한 인간의 지배를 인정하되, 함부로 방일하거나 지나치지 않아야 한다는 가르침을 전해준다. 중도의 개념은 생태계의 특성이나 인간의 경제활동에도 부합하며, 인간의 삶을 생태친화적인 모습으로 변모시키기 위한 중요한 출발점이 된다. 코로나 위기에서 벗어나기 위해서라도, 우리는 불교경제학의 반성적 성찰을 더욱 눈여겨볼 필요가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the end of 2019, The COVID-19 crisis has spread rapidly and caused a serious crisis in human society. In order to overcome this ecological crisis, it is necessary to analyze not only human domination of nature and the anthropocentrism that originated from this, but also the characteristics of capitalist economic structure. Mainstream economics believes that environmental problems can be solved by internalizing externalities through the price mechanism. However, this economics still presupposes an economist view of progress or growthmania, so it is not easy to get out of the ecological crisis. Contrary to this economics, Schumacher s Buddhist economics, proposed in 1973 based on the Buddhist spirit, criticizes the growthmania of capitalist society and suggests alternatives to escape from environmental destruction or ecological crisis. For this reason, his Buddhist economics is evaluated to provide the possibility of a green economy and a philosophical, spiritual, and economic basis for environmental movement. From the Buddhist point of view it is not dichotomized into humans and nature. Human survival is bound to depend on other beings in nature, and caring for other beings is a condition for the safety of everyone, including myself. Along with the awareness of such Interdependence (緣起), the concept of the Middle Way (中道) teaches us that while we acknowledge human dominion over nature, we should not neglect or go too far. The concept of the Middle Way is consistent with the characteristics of the ecosystem or human economic activity, and is an important starting point for transforming human life into an eco-friendly form. Even in order to get out of the COVID-19 crisis, we need to pay more attention to the reflective reflections of Buddhist economics.
