영문 초록

Background: Cancer is the second biggest cause of death in Mongolia. However, healthcare centers responsible for terminal patients’ hospice care are few. Family caregivers of cancer patients in Mongolian households have very little knowledge and experience of cancer patient care. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the educational needs of the family caregivers of cancer patients regarding home care in Mongolia. Methods: A convenience sample of 150 family caregivers of cancer patients were recruited from public health clinics of six districts in Ulaanbaatar city. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire from June to August 2017, and the questionnaire was revised 54 items by the researcher that Jung had developed for care worker. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Scheffé test with SPSS 23.0 program. This study was approved by the institutional review board at C university (2-1041055-AB-N-01-2017–49). Results: Total mean score of participants’ educational needs was 3.70. By area of needs, emotional support and other (basic nursing skills) areas were most needed. Specifically, “Terminal care,” “Conversing,” “Managing diet and nutrition,” “Performing or helping range of motion,” and “Caregiving for family members on patient’s passing away” were the highest demands. Educational needs differed by cancer stages, family caregivers of stage 4 patients had greater educational needs than those of stage 3 patients. Conclusion: This study was conducted to provide basic data for an educational program about cancer patients’ home care by investigating family caregivers’ educational needs. An educational program tailored to participants’ needs will positively affect the quality of life of family caregivers living under stress and burden of caregiving and ultimately contribute to patients’ health recovery.
