미성취 영재에 관한 국내 연구 동향 및 과제

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 지금까지 1990년대 초부터 국내에서 이루어진 미성취 영재에 대한 연구 결과를 통해 연구 동향을 파악하고, 향후 연구 과제를 제시함으로써 이 영역에 대한 연구는 물론 교육 및 정책적 지원을 위한 기반 조성에 기여하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 설문, 사례, 그리고 실험연구로 수행된 28편의 논문을 분석하였으며, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 국내 연구자들은 ‘잠재력(능력)과 실제 수행(성취)간의 불일치’를 바탕으로 미성취 영재를 정의하고, 이들을 판별하기 위해 주로 지능검사나 표준화된 검사 점수, 혹은 학업 성취도 등을 사용하였다. 또한 연구자들은 미성취 영재의 일반적인 특성을 성격, 학습동기 및 학습전략, 가정환경 및 부모의 양육태도, 또래 및 교사에 대한 태도 등의 측면에서 탐색하였다. 영재의 학업적 미성취 극복을 위한 경험적 연구는 상담과 교수적 중재 프로그램을 통하여 수행되었다. 지금까지 수행된 연구 동향을 바탕으로 추후 연구가 필요한 과제를 제안해 보면 다음과 같다. 먼저 미성취 영재에 대한 개념적 정의와 판별 준거를 분명하게 할 필요가 있으며, 영재의 학업적 미성취와 관련된 변인들을 구체적으로 밝히는 연구와 이들 변인간의 인과관계를 밝히는 연구가 필요하다. 또한 영재의 학업적 미성취를 예방하고 극복하도록 돕기 위한 모형(model) 개발과 다양한 중재 전략에 대한 경험적 연구가 필요하다. 마지막으로, 개인 혹은 프로파일 중심의 종단적 사례 연구가 활성화되어야 한다.

영문 초록

The current study reviewed the research trends that have been written about the definitions and psychological characteristics of gifted underachievers, factors influencing underachievement, and intervention strategies to reverse underachievement in Korea. Most domestic researchers defined underachievement based on discrepancy between potential (ability) and actual performance (achievement), and mainly used intelligence tests, standardized test scores, or academic achievement to identify them. Furthermore, researchers explored the general characteristics of gifted underachievers in terms of personality, learning motivation and learning strategies, home environment and parental parenting attitudes, and attitudes toward peers and teachers. Empirical researches to reverse underachievement were carried out through counseling and instructional intervention programs. Findings from the research trends conducted so far, the following tasks are proposed that require further research. First of all, it is necessary to clarify the conceptual definition and identification of gifted underachievers, and to study specific variables related to the academic underachievement and to reveal the causal relationships between these variables. It also requires model development and empirical researches on various intervention strategies to help prevent and reverse the academic underachievement among the gifted students. Finally, individual or profile-oriented longitudinal case studies should be activated.
