국문 초록

오늘날 우리 사회문화는 신자본주의와 과학기술만능주의로 말미암아 지난 세기보다 더 심각한 억압과 소외, 그리고 비인간화의모습들을 보이고 있다. 특히 디지털 이미지 영상을 비롯한 최첨단의 정보공학의 발달은 과거와 달리 또 다른 형태로 청소년의 삶을 억압과 소외, 그리고 비인간화의 삶으로 빠져들게 하고 있다. 모순된 합리주의적 정치 경제 체계로 말미암아 드러내지 않은 지배체제에 대해 ‘침묵문화’가 형성되고 있다. 더욱이 자본주의식 틀에 얽매인 오늘날 교육은 교육의 사명을 다하지 못하고 오히려 경쟁주의와 차별을 낳은 역기능적 교육에 머물러 침묵문화를 형성하도록 돕는 기능이 되어버린 현실이다. 이 글은 그 동안 잊혀져있었던 프레어리의 비판적 의식화교육론을 오늘날 청소년 교육론으로 다시 대두시켜야할 필요성이 있다고 생각하면서 쓴 글이다. 이글을 통해 우리는 왜 오늘날 프레어리의 의식화 교육론이 다시 요청되는지 알아보고자 한다. 신자본주의 시대 속에서 교묘하고 고도의 수법으로 진화된 오늘날의 ‘억압’과 ‘비인간화’ 문제를 소위 “포스트-파울로 프레어리”(post-Paulo Feire)시대에도 해결되지 않은 채 계속 되어온 문제로 간주하면서, 특히 프레어리의 교육론의 핵심인 문해교육을 위한 비판적 의식화 교육론을 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 한 걸음 더 나아가 오늘날 청소년들에게 어떻게 프레어리의 의식화 교육론을 적용할 수 있는지에 관한 논문이다.

영문 초록

Today’s our society is getting more and more to be oppressed, alienated, and dehumanized by neo-capitalism and scientism. Especially, teenagers and children are using a smart phone or a computer at a younger age than any previous generation. Actually, it is common and useful for them, but dangerous sometimes. If scientific technology is misapplied, it is used for a purpose for which it is not intended or not suitable. Nowadays the most advanced computer technology makes today’s adolescents dehumanized into oppressed and alienated life. It will include, not only internet and computer game addiction, but also attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression. Harmful effects stemming from addiction to computer games are getting increasingly serious among teenagers. From this perspective, I will show Paulo Freire’s theory about conscientization in this paper. I think it is an idea that may be worth revisiting at this age. We need education for the technological literacy as well as the informational literacy in the post-modern sociocultural settings. Of course, the context of today’s oppression and alienation by scientific technology is different from the previous generation’s one by political and economic situation which was the period of Paulo Freire’s activity. But it is useful and helpful even if the past situation in Brazil is not directly comparable to the present one in the computer information engineering society. So, I also want to reinterpret his theory about conscientization transforming the situations of dehumanization by oppression and alienation. It is what I call “post”-Paulo Freire’s education for critical consciousness in the period of “post-modernity.” Therefore, this paper will explore some key issues in Freire’s education for critical consciousness especially related with pedagogy for today’s adolescents who live in the Korean post-modern society. It also proposes new interpretation for Paulo Freire’s theory and praxis in light of the post-modern theorists such as Jean Baudrilard, Henri Bergson, and Michel Foucault. And finally, in conclusion, the conceptual model with Freire’s five steps for the education of critical consciousness tries to be reapplied to education for today’s Korean adolescents.
