This study examine the relationship between intangible assets and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. I use quarterly and annual data of U.S. GDP from the Bureau of Economic Analyses website and obtain quarterly and annual financial data of firms from COMPUSTAT. This research covers the periods from 2001 to 2015 as interest rate information from the Federal Reserve provides Treasure bill rates starting from 2001. As GDP is the sum of all final goods and services in the economy I include all industries that are regulated such as financial and utility industries as well. The final sample of annual data includes 33,848 observations and quarterly data includes 108,039 observations. The results provide preliminary evidence that intangible assets, specifically, R&D expense, are positively associated with GDP growth which supports the BEA’s decision to incorporate intangible assets in estimating GDP. Thus, timely accounting data can help macroeconomists to polish their predictions of GDP growth as both GDP and accounting information play a central role in economic growth. This study makes several contributions as follows. First, I contribute to the growing literature in bridging macroeconomics and accounting research together. Second, this study highlight intangible assets are an important and significant portion of the financial statements, and timely accounting data can help macroeconomists to polish their predictions of GDP growth. In addition, future studies across these two disciplines will provide synergy and will benefit academics, investors, regulators and various stakeholders that hold an interest in these fields.
