국문 초록

2018년도 노벨 문학상 수상자인 올가 토카르추크(Olga Tokarczuk: 1962~ )의 『방랑자들 (Bieguni)』(2007)은 작가의 대표작으로 꼽히는 작품으로 2018년도에 멘부커 인터내셔널 상을 수상하기도 했다. 작가는 17세기부터 21세기까지 다양한 시공간을 배경으로 각자 나름의 이유로 여행길에 오른 다채로운 인간군상을 보여주면서, 우리를 쉼 없이 움직이게 만드는 ‘여행’ 또는 ‘이동’이야말로 인간을 자유롭게 해줄 수 있음을 역설한다. 여행과 이동의 의미를 21세기적 맥락에서 탐구하고자 했던 『방랑자들』에서 토카르추크는 ‘신체로서의 인간’에 주목하면서 ‘인체에 대한 탐험’ 또한 일종의 여행으로 간주한다. 목적과 이유는 저마다 다르지만, 경계를 넘나드는 이동을 실현하는 주체가 바로 인간의 몸이기 때문이다. 그래서 『방랑자들』에는 ‘몸’에 관한 에피소드, 그중에서도 특히 파편화된 인체 부위에 대한 언급이 자주 등장한다. 인간의 내장기관을 전시한 박물관에 대한 관람기록과 인체를 방부 처리해서 영구 보존하기 위해 고심하는 해부학자들의 사연 또한 큰 비중을 차지한다. 토카르추크는 정신과 몸을 대립시키지 않는다. 작가의 이러한 시각은 정신이나 의식보다 몸의 감각을 사유와 지각의 중심에 놓고 있다는 점에서, 그리고 신체의 고유한 주체성과 능동성을 강조하고 있다는 점에서 모리스 메를로-퐁티의 철학과 밀접한 연관성이 발견된다. 토카츠추크는『방랑자들』을 통해 ‘필멸’의 존재인 인간의 육체를 ‘불멸’이라는 주제와 연관 지어 성찰하면서 인간의 몸에 깃든 에너지와 무한한 가능성에 주목한다.

영문 초록

A winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature, Olga Tokarczuk(1962~ ) won the Man Booker International Prize for her novel Flights(Polish title: Bieguni) in 2018. It is a hybrid novel consisting of 116 texts on the common keyword of ‘travel’ or ‘vagabond’. Tokarczuk emphasizes that travel can truly free humans by keeping us moving continuously through the appearance of various characters who travel through different times and places in endless succession, between the seventeenth and twenty-first centuries. In Flights, which explores the meaning of journey and movement in the context of the twenty-first century, Olga Tokarczuk views ‘an exploration of the human body’ as a kind of journey in which one focuses on ‘the human being as a physical body.’ This is because the principal agent which realizes movement across boundaries is the live human body - though the purposes and reasons for such movement may be diverse. Thus, Flights contains numerous stories about the ‘body,’ and more particularly certain physical parts of the human body. Records of visits to museums which exhibit human internal organs, as well as stories about anatomists who conduct research on the eternal preservation of the human body though plastination, occupy a large part the book. Tokarczuk does not focus on conflict between mind and body. In the sense that she places physical sensation, rather than mind or consciousness, at the center of thought and awareness, and emphasizes the independence of the body, her approach seems to have a close relationship with the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In essence, Tokarczuk emphasized on the energy and limitless possibilities of the human body by associating the mortal human body with the theme of ‘immortality.’
