국문 초록

이 논문은 중세 유럽정체성 문제를 주제로 삼고 있다. 중세 유럽정체성의질문을 제기하는 이유는 현재 유럽연합이 마주하고 있는 방향성의 상실과위기가 유럽의 정체성 문제와 연관되어 있기 때문이다. 그리고 유럽정체성의 문제 설명하기 위해서는 유럽정체성의 중세적 기원을 분석하는 작업이필요하다. 중세 유럽의 정체성을 설명하기 위해서 중세의 유럽이념과 중세에 제기되었던 유럽의 정치적 통합계획들을 분석하였다. 중세 유럽의 이름은 신화적 혹은 지리적 의미를 넘어서서 문화적이고 정치적인 함축성을 가지고 있었다. 유럽은 기독교 세계 혹은 기독교 공화국과동의어의 사용되었고, 하나의 문화적 통일체를 부르는 이름이었다. 또한 명칭은 유럽의 정치적 통일을 위한 호소가 기초할 수 있는 근거가 되어주었다. 이러한 유럽정체성의 중세적 특징은 현재 유럽연합이 가지고 있는 정체성의중요한 한 부분을 구성하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article deals with the question of the identity of Europe in the Middle Ages. This thema is important, because the state of disorientation and the crisis of Europe nowadays are connected with the question of european identity. In order to explain the question of the identity of Europe, it is necessary to analyse the medieval origin of european identity. Especially this article analyses the idea of Europe and the plans for political unification of Europe. The name of Europe, which had mythical and geographical Implication, had also cultural and political Implication in the Middle Ages. The name of Europe was synonymous with ‘Christendom’ or ‘Republic of Christianity’ and it had the meaning of cultural unity. Relying on the cultural unity, the Europeans could appeal the realization of political unification of Europe. This characteristic of medieval identity of Europe is an important part of european identity of EU.
