A Probe-Goal Approach to the EPP-Effect of Wh-Interrogatives in English and Korean

영문 초록

The main purpose of this study is to argue, along the line of Chomksy s (2004) Uniformity Principle, that all natural languages have isomorphic SEM representation for wh-interrogatives despite their different surface forms at PHON. During the argumentation, I suggest two significant minimalist proposals concerning wh-questions within Chomsky s(2001, 2004, 2005a, 2005b) Probe-Goal Framework: first, the edge feature ( EF) of interrogative C, which has been assumed to produce an EPP-effect attracting wh-phrase to SPEC-CP, can be satisfied by overt or covert wh-movement in the narrow syntax (NS), involving the parametric variations for an agreement system of natural languages, and second, the chorus agreement principle, suggested in this paper, must be adopted to determine the scopes for wh-in-situ s occurring in multiple wh-questions.
