국문 초록

이 논문은 한국인들의 탈북민에 대한 태도를 분석하였다. 탈북민들은 이민자의 한 분류로서 고려되기는 하나, 이들에 대한 인식 조사는 기존 이민자 연구에서 흔히 보여지는 접근법과는 다른 관점이 필요하다. 기존 이민자에 대한 인식을 분석한 연구들에서 가장 주된 요인으로 취급된 것은 바로 경제적 요인들이었다. 본 연구는 한국인들의 탈북민에 대한 태도는 경제적인 차원뿐만 아니라 강한 정치적 차원을 갖고 있다고 주장한다. 회귀분석을 이용한 경험적 분석 결과는 경제적 요인 단독으로는 한국인들이 탈북민에 대해 갖는 태도를 충분히 설명할 수 없음을 보여준다. 통일에 대한 견해, 정부의 대북 정책에 대한 평가 등 정치적인 요인들이 한국인들의 탈북민에 대한 인식 형성에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 이 논문은 정치적 요인의 중요성을 밝히면서, 탈북민에 대한 연구뿐만 아니라 다른 지역 및 나라에서의 이민자, 난민 등에 대한 연구에 의미 있는 함의를 제공하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines South Koreans’ attitudes toward North Korean defectors. An examination of South Koreans’ attitudes toward North Korean defectors requires the consideration of a perspective that differs from that predominantly found in the previous literature on immigrants. One of the most significant factors that the previous literature has considered in explaining natives’ attitudes toward immigrants is economic. The present study examines political as well as economic factors that explain South Koreans’ attitudes toward North Korean defectors because the issue of North Korean defectors has not only an economic but also a strong political dimension. The regression results show that economic variables alone cannot sufficiently explain the formation of opinions of refugees from North Korea. Political variables, such as opinions regarding Korean reunification and evaluations of the policies of former governments regarding North Korea, play important roles. By revealing the significance of political factors, the present study provides important implications for the studies of refugees and immigrants in other countries.
