조선 도교 인물전에 나타난 세속 단절의 양상과 의미

국문 초록

이 글은 조선 후기에 나타나는 ‘도교 인물전의 부상’이 지닌 의미를 고구하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 먼저 중국 초기 도교 인물전의 창작 목적과 구성을 살피고, 그것의 문학사적 계승이라는 관점에서 조선 도교 인물전을 고찰했다. 특히 인물이 보인 세속 단절과 세속 회귀의 양상과 의미를 중심으로 도교 인물전이 지닌 ‘사회적 단절과 소통’의 의미를 도출하였다. 『열선전』, 『신선전』, 허균의 도교 인물전 등에서 확인되는 창작의 목적은 도교 인물의 역사성을 확인하는 것이고, 그 구성은 세속과의 관계를 축으로 ‘연결과 단절’의 반복이다. 구체적으로 내용은 ‘출신-수련-이적-득선’으로 구성된다. 이것은 ‘세속-단절-회귀-단절’의 구조로 재서술 되고, 그 내용은 ‘세속에 종속된 존재-세속에 의해 단절된 존재-세속에 자발적으로 회귀한 존재-세속과 자발적 단절로 완전해진 존재’이다. 또한 ‘세속-단절-회귀-단절’의 구조는 ‘유교 질서와 어긋나는 다른 자질의 발견-도교적 인간 되기를 통한 존재적 전환-도교 인물의 존재함 확인과 전환된 존재의 세속과 소통-완전한 인간 되기’를 의미한다. 18세기 이후 도교 인물전은 단절보다 회귀에 방점을 둔다. 회귀는 세속과 소통을 위한 장치이다. 단절을 기준으로 존재의 질적 변화를 경험한 도교 인물은 종속과 독립의 경계에서 세상과 소통하게 된다. 허균의 시대에는 그들의 존재를 입전자가 증언했다면 18세기 이후에는 대중의 익명성 속에 숨은 도교 인물을 민중이 증언하고 입전자는 그 뒤를 ？i으며 확인하려고 노력한다. 도교 인물은 주자학의 질서와 다른 새로운 방식의 삶을 추구하는 사람들이다. 그들은 민중과 소통하며 존재감을 확장한다. 허균 시대에는 도교 인물의 존재를 증명하는 것이 사회적 요청이었고 후대에는 민중의 익명성 안에 깃들어 있는 그들을 발견하는 것이 도교 인물전의 과제였다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This study explores the meaning of the “Rise of Taoist Figure Stories” in the late Joseon Dynasty. To this end, the creation purpose and composition of the Taoist Figure Stories in early China were first examined, and the Joseon Taoist Figure Stories were then considered from the perspective of its literary historical succession. In particular, the meaning of “social disconnection and communication” of the Taoist Character Stories was derived, focusing on the aspects and meanings of secular disconnection and secular regression seen by the figures. The purpose of creation, which is confirmed in the Liexianzhuan, Shenxianzhuan, and Heo Gyun’s Taoist Figures Stories, is to confirm the historicality of Taoist figures. Specifically, the content is composed of “Birth-training-doing bizarre deed-getting Immortality”. This is redescribed in the structure of “secular-severance-return-severance”, and the content is “subordinate to the world-being cut off by the world-being voluntarily returning to the world-being perfected by spontaneous disconnection from the world” In addition, the structure of “secular-severance-return-severance” is “discovery of other qualities contrary to the Confucian order-existential transformation through becoming a Taoist person-confirmation of the existence of a Taoist character, and communication with the world of the converted being-becoming a complete human.” Taoist figures are people who pursue a new way of life that is different from the neo-Confucian order. They communicate with the people and expand their presence. In HeoGera, it was a social request to prove the existence of Taoist figures, and in the later generations, it was the task of the Taoist Figures Stories to discover them in the anonymity of the people.
