소통과 단절의 사이에서 길을 만들다, 함경도 구비서사시 <양산백·축영대> 연구

국문 초록

《문굿》의 구비서사시 〈양산백·축영대〉가 구연되는 함경도 망묵굿은 죽음의 의례이다. 죽음으로 비롯된 생자(生者)와 망자(亡者)의 단절에서 굿이 시작되기 때문이다. 이때 생자는 굿을 통해 망자가 저승으로 잘 가기를 희망하면서도 그와 다시 만나기를 소망한다. 이를 위해 생자는 망자와 소통하는 길이 필요했다. 본 논문은 〈양산백·축영대〉의 주인공 축영대가 생자와 망자 사이의 끊어진 길을 잇는 신이 되는 과정을 살폈다. 먼저 고전소설 〈양산백전〉과 달리 〈양산백·축영대〉는 양산백, 축영대의 사랑을 집중적으로 다루는 서사시임을 확인했다. 그런데 이때 〈양산백·축영대〉가 구연되는 제차로 알려진 《문굿》과 연관 지어 논의하면 여러 의문점이 발생했다. 실제 망묵굿에서 《문굿》의 연행 여부와 《문굿》에서 〈양산백·축영대〉의 연행 여부가 명확하지 않은 것이다. 다만, 임석재, 장주근, 김태곤이 남겨 놓은 조사 보고에는 〈양산백·추영대〉가 망묵굿에서 구연되는 이유를 해명할 수 있는 자료가 있음을 확인하였다. 첫 번째 자료는 김태곤이 남긴 〈양산백·추영대〉에 관한 주석이다. 그는 이 서사시가 젊어서 죽은 망인의 경우에만 적용된다고 설명했다. 본 논문은 김태곤이 이러한 주석을 붙인 것은 〈양산백·축영대〉가 ‘혼사굿’에서 구연되었기 때문임을 파악했다. 즉, 서사시의 주인공인 양산백, 축영대는 현실에서 사랑을 이루지 못했지만 저승에서 사랑을 이룬 인물임을 확인한 것이다. 그렇기에 양산백, 축영대는 사랑을 이루지 못하고 젊어서 죽은 망령들을 위로하는 신으로 볼 수 있다. 두 번째 자료는 임석재, 장주근이 남긴 《문굿》의 실제 명칭이다. 임석재, 장주근은 〈양산백·축영대〉가 구연되는 제차를 ‘《문굿(문굿천두질굿)》’이라 표기했다. 이에 본 논문은 〈양산백·축영대〉를 ‘문굿’을 넘어 ‘길굿’의 관점에서 해석을 시도했다. 그 결과 〈양산백·축영대〉에서 축영대는 사랑의 힘으로 양산백에게 가는 새로운 길을 놓고 있음을 확인했다. 그렇기에 축영대는 생자와 망자 사이의 끊어진 길을 다시 잇는 신이 될 수 있었다. 정리하면 〈양산백·축영대〉는 사랑을 이루지 못하고 젊어서 죽은 망령들을 위로하는 신에 관한 내력과 생자와 망자 사이의 끊어진 길을 다시 잇는 신에 관한 내력이 다층적으로 담긴 서사시라고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Mangmukgut in Hamgyeong-do, where the epic “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” of “Mungut” is featured, is a ritual of death. Because the ritual[gut] begins at the disconnection from the dead of the dead and the living beings. At this time, the living beings hope that the dead will go to the otherworld well, but hope to see them again. To do so, the living beings needed a way to communicate with the dead. This study examined the process of the main character of “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” becoming a god connecting the cut-off path between the living and the dead. First, unlike the classic novel “YangsanBaekjeon”, it was confirmed that “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” is an epic that focuses on the love between YangsanBaek and Chukyeongdae. However, there were many questions when discussing it in connection with “Mungut”, known as the “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae”. It is not clear whether “Mungut” was performed in Mangmukgut and “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” in “Mungut”. However, the survey report left by Lim Seok-jae, Jang Joo-geun, and Kim Tae-gon confirmed that there was material to explain why “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” was played in Mangmukgut. The first was a comment on “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” left by Kim Tae-gon. He explained that the epic only applies to die young. This paper found that Kim Tae-gon made such annotations because “Yangsan-baek and Chukyeongdae” was performed in Honsagut(otherworld wedding ritual). In other words, the main characters of the epic, “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae”, proved that they did not achieve love in reality, but they achieved love in the otherworld. Thus, Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae can be seen as gods that comfort the spirits who died young without achieving love. The second was the actual name of “Mungut” left by Lim Seok-jae and Jang Joo-geun. They labeled the ritual procedure, which performed “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae”, as “Munduchoendujilgut.” In response, this study attempted to interpret “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” from the perspective of “Gilgut” beyond “Mungut”. As a result, in “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae”, Chukyeongdae confirmed that a new path to Yangsanbaek is set by the power of love. Therefore, the Chukyeongdae was able to become a god connecting the broken road between the living and the dead. In short, “Yangsanbaek and Chukyeongdae” is a multi-layered epic about a god who comforts the specter who died young without achieving love and a god who reconnects the broken path between the living and the dead.
