국문 초록

본 연구는 서울시의 25개 구에서 120명씩 성별·연령별 할당표집한 서울시민들을 설문조사한 데이터를 활용하여 마을 공동체 활동에 참여하는 사람은 누구이며, 이들이 지지하는 정치적·사회적 가치가 무엇인지를 밝히는 실증연구를 실시하였다. 본 연구에서는 ‘마을 공동체 활동 참여’를 설명하기 위해 ‘탈물질주의 가치지향’, ‘권위주의 가치지향’, 그리고 ‘정치적 이념성향’ 세 가지에 주목하였다. ‘탈물질주의 가치지향’은 마을 공동체 활동은 환경보호나 공동육아 등 기존의 정치·경제적 제도가 추구했던 가치와는 다른 대안적 가치를 추구하고 있다는 점을 반영하기 위해 선택되었으며, ‘권위주의적 가치지향’은 마을 공동체 활동 역시도 조직적 활동이며, 이에 따른 서열의식 그리고 리더쉽에 대한 태도를 반영하기 위해 선택되었다. 또한 마을공동체 활동이 진보-보수 양진영에서 같이 일어나고 있으며, 상대 진영의 공동체 활동을 정치적 활동으로 규정하려는 점에서 ‘정치적 이념성향’도 같이 고려하였다. 연구결과 현재의 마을 공동체 활성화 참여자들은 서열의식과 강력한 리더쉽을 중시하는 권위주의적 가치를 선호하는 보수적 시민들이 주도하는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the participants of ‘community building projects’ initiated and funded by central and local governments as well as ‘conventional community,’ and how they are mobilized with what value orientations and political ideology. Based on multistage quota sampling, we conducted face-to-face survey interviews of 120 citizens residing in 25 districts in Seoul, South Korea. Relying on survey responses, we investigates the relationships between respondents’ political ideology and two value orientations (i.e., post-materialism and authoritarianism) and two modes of community participations (i.e., ‘community building project’ and ‘conventional community’). Results show that participants of community building projects are citizens with strong authoritarian personalities emphasizing the importance of strong leadership and hierarchy in associations. This study relying on ordinary people with quantitative research methods showed results different from those found in the previous qualitative studies focusing on a few salient community movements led by professional activists with the motivation of alternative values (e.g., environmental concerns, or human rights). Implications of the findings, regarding the nature of Korean community building projects, are discussed.
