구스노키 마사시게(楠正成)의 병법(兵法)에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 『다이헤이키(太平記)』에 기술되어 있는 마사시게의 병법의 특징을 면밀히 분석하는 것을 통해, 일본 중세시대의 ‘악당(悪党)’ 전술의 특징을 명확히 하고자 하였다. 『다이헤이키』에서 마사시게가 구사한 전술은 아카사카성과 지하야성과 같은 험준한 산악지역에 위치한 요해를 활용하여 ‘악당’이 사용하는 산악전법을 임기응변으로 실천한 것으로, 공격해오는 적군에게 나무와 돌을 투하하거나 짚인형을 사용하여 적을 농락한 전법은 기나이(畿内) 지역 근방의 ‘악당’이나 ‘산적’의 상투적인 전투수단이었다. 마사시게는 소수의 병력으로 막부의 대군을 상대하기 위해, 전쟁의 승부는 반드시 숫자의 많고 적음에 있는 것이 아니라 병사의 마음을 하나로 뭉치는 것이 중요하다는 것을 강조한다. 동국(東国)지방의 무사들이 용맹하지만 공성전(攻城戰)에는 익숙하지 않고, 허술해 보이는 성곽과 소수의 병력을 보고 무시하고 달려들 것을 예상하고 있었던 마사시게는 소수의 병력을 효율적으로 운용하며, 정보전이나 보급선의 차단 등 다양한 전략을 준비하여 대비한 것이다. 이에 더해 마사시게가 견고한 방어태세를 확립하여 막부군의 맹공에 견뎌 승리할 수 있었던 요인은 무엇보다 마사시게와 주변지역의 노부시(野伏)와의 관계가 있었다고 할 수 있다. 슈겐(修験)의 성지인 곤고산지(金剛山地)에 위치한 지하야성(千早城)에서 산과 들을 속속들이 파악하고 있는 야마부시들과 연계하고 있었기 때문에 난공불락(難攻不落)이 될 수 있었던 것이다. 이와 같이 마사시게의 병법은 지역을 기반으로 하는 ‘악당’의 전술을 기초로 하여 일반적인 전술과는 상이한 양상을 보이며, 다른 가마쿠라(鎌倉)의 고케닌(御家人)들과는 구분되는 것이었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the ‘villain; tactics of the Japanese Middle Ages through a close analysis of the characteristics of Masashige’s tactics described in Taiheiki. The tactic used by Masashige in Taiheiki was an expedient practice of mountain tactics used by the ‘villain’ by utilizing the fortresses located in the rugged mountain areas such as Akasaka Castle and Chihaya Castle. The tactic of dropping trees and stones to the approaching enemy or using straw puppets to cajole the enemy was a conventional means of combat, practiced by ‘villains’ or ‘bandits’ in the vicinity of the Kinai area. Masashige emphasized the importance of uniting the hearts of the soldiers, not necessarily in large numbers, in order to deal with the large army of the Shogunate with a small number of troops. Although the warriors of the Tougoku area are courageous, they are not familiar with siege warfare, so Masashige expected that they would rush in ignoring the seemingly poor castles and a small number of troops, and effectively operated a small number of troops relying on diverse tactics such as information war or blocking supply lines of the enemy. In addition, the reason for the establishment of Masashige’s strong defense and enduring of the onslaught of the Shogunate forces for victory lied in more than anything else the close relationship between Masashige and Nobushi in the surrounding area. It was impregnable because it was connected with the Yamabushi, who are thoroughly familiar with the neighboring mountains and fields in Chihaya Castle, located in the Kongo Range, the sacred place of Shugen. In this way, Masashige’s tactics were based on the tactics of the ‘villain’ based on the locality, showing a different pattern from the general tactics, which was distinguished from the other Kamakura Gokenin(御家人).
