국문 초록

이 논문은 최근 변화하고 커뮤니티 개념의 이론사를 추적하여 그 변화를 추동하고 있는 동인을 후기정초주의의 ‘초과’의 사유에서 찾는다. 커뮤니티의 근본적 기반으로 개인을 개념화하면서도 동시에 개인들 사이의 분쟁과 폭력을 국가의 주권에 의해 관리·통제하는 근대적 사유는 미국 주도의 신자유주의 시대에 그 모순이 오히려 심화되었으며, 후기정초주의에 와서는 동일성의 사유로 비판받아왔다. 낭시, 데리다, 에스포지토와 같은 후기정초주의자들은 커뮤니티를 개인들의 집합으로서의 동일성이 아니라 개인들의 차이 그 자체를 호명하는 개념으로, 더 나아가 개인의 동일성을 끊임없이 타자들간의 차이로 탈구시키고 전화하는 운동으로 파악한다. 근대적 커뮤니티 개념이 동일성을 유지하고 타자를 배제함으로써 외부적 폭력에 대한 면역을 오히려 내부적 폭력으로 전화하는 국가주의로 귀결되었다면, 최근의 커뮤니티 개념은 이런 면역의 구조에 대한 발본적인 비판을 수행함으로써 새로운 공동체 구성의 원리를 모색한다. 이 논문은 이런 근대적 면역성 패러다임을 비판하되 면역성 개념을 폐기하는 것이 아니라 폭력에 대해 지속적인 사유와 반성을 가능하게 하는 변증법적 역동의 원리로 재사유할 것을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This paper traces the recent change in the imagination and representation of community and argues that the impetus for this change is anchored at the thought of excess that emerges in the wake of the discursive ascendence of the post-foundationalism. If the traditional approach to community is based upon the coupling of the sanctified concept of individuality and the power of sovereignty, then liberalism’s (and neo-liberalism’s) logic of identity can be criticized because of the structural possibility of sovereignty for the state of exception and violence. Many post-foundationalists, including Jacques Nancy, Jacques Derrida, and Roberto Esposito, conceptualize a new concept of community as constituted through difference per se rather than identity. In other words, if the modern state community’s attempt to immune itself from any external violence and to maintain its own identity and integrity irrevocably leads to the exclusion of the others, the new concept of community tries to denounce the modern paradigm of immunity. While this paper basically agrees with the post-foundationalist position, it also argues that, rather than jettisoning the concept of immunity, we need to invigorate the concept by giving back to it the dialectical dynamics—that is, the constant rethought and ‘re-treat’ of violence in the constitution of community.
