국문 초록

이 논문은 미국이란 타자가 물질문화를 통해 서서히 그 표상을 드러내기 시작했던 근대 초기 조선을 미국화의 측면에서 살펴본다. 이를 위해서 1890년대와 1900년대 발행되었던 근대 신문에 나타난 미국 제품의 광고를 중심으로 당시 조선 사회에서 미국이라는 국가가 갖는 의미를 분석한다. 1890년대에 미국 제품은 조선 미국인 선교사 가정을 대상으로 제한적으로 유통되는 경향이 있었고, 마찬가지로 조선 사회 전반적으로도 미국 제품은 서양 제품, 근대 물품의 일부로서 인식되었다. 그러나 1900년대 넘어서면서 조선에서 미국 제품의 유통, 판매가 확장되고 있는 모습이 근대 신문의 광고에 가시적으로 나타나기 시작한다. 이 논문은 근대 초기 조선의 서구화, 근대화 과정에서 상대적으로 간과되어 온 미국화 현상을 짚어보며, 미국 제국주의연구와 한국 근대사연구에서 부재하고 있는 19세기 말, 20세기 초 조선에서의 미국의 의미를 고찰해본다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the early modern Korea when the United States began to reveal its representation through material culture, and reconsiders the period of the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century of Korea in terms of Americanization. The sales and distribution of American products, which were limited to American missionary communities in Korea in the 1890s, expanded to the general Korean public market after the 1900s. Such changes are visible in the advertisements of modern Korean newspapers and magazines of the time. Paying attentions to the American material culture, it examines the aspects of Americanization in the early modern Korea, which has been relatively obscured by the terms of Westernization and modernization, and overlooked in the fields of both American Empire studies and the modern Korean studies.
