강평국의 3.1운동 참여와 수감

국문 초록

제주 사람 강평국은 1919년 서울의 3.1운동에 참여한 독립운동가이면서도 여태 조명 받지 못하고 있는 인물이다. 강평국은 1917년부터 박희도가 이끄는 비밀서클에 참여하였고 최은희, 최정숙, 고수선 등과 함께 비밀서클의 주요인물로 활동을 이끌었다. 강평국은 경성여자고등보통학교 학생으로 학생들을 이끌던 수령급 중 한 사람으로 기록에 남아있다. 강평국은 1919년 2월 28일 제주도 남학생 박규훈 등에게서 3월 1일의 만세운동의 실시를 전달받고 학교 내에 알렸다. 3월 1일 강평국은 비밀서클 동지들과 함께 닫힌 교문을 부수고 학생들을 만세 행렬로 이끌어 서울 시내 일대를 하루 종일 대한독립만세를 외치며 다녔다. 강평국은 인가에 숨어들어가 체포되지 않았다. 3월 5일 강평국은 다시 기숙사생 전원을 이끌고 남대문역 광장의 제2차 만세시위운동에 참여하여 서울 시내를 행진하며 독립만세를 불렀다. 강평국은 제2차 만세시위운동으로 체포되어 서대문 감옥에 수감되었다. 비밀서클의 주요 인물이었던 경성여자고등보통학교 7명이 함께 수감되어 있다가 3월 24일 석방되었다. 강평국은 1933년 요절하였고 유족도 없어 그의 뜻을 제대로 기리지 못하고 있다.

영문 초록

Kang Pyeong-kuk was the political activist from Jeju who engaged in 3.1 movement in 1919. Kang became the member of the secret society for independence movement that was led by Park Hee-do from 1917, and she played the key role with other activists like Choi Eun-hee, Choi Jeong-suk, and Ko Soo-sun. Kang studied at Kyung-seong Women s High School, and became one of leading person in the student group. In February 28th of 1919, Kang notified the students of the demonstration on March 1st, after Park Kyu-hoon informed her of its plan. On March 1st, Kang broke the closed gates of her school with the other members of the secret society to participate in the 3.1 movement. Kang led the crowd of demonstrators throughout the day with appealing for Korean independence. On that day, Kang evaded the police detention with hiding herself in the houses nearby. On March 5th, Kang engaged in the 2nd demonstration at the square near Namdaemun station. Kang organized the students in the school dormitory to march for Korean Independence over the city of Seoul. Then, Kang was arrested for this 2nd demonstration and detained at Seodaemun Prison until March 24th. At that time, Kang was detained with other 7 students of Kyung-seong Women s High School who were also the leaders of the secret society. However, Kang s activities for Korean independence was not widely known to the public, because Kang died young in 1933 with no bereaved family afterwards who would commemorate Kang s activism.
