국문 초록

주막은 역의 기능을 보조하기 위해 반관반민의 설비로 운영된 조선시대 원에 기원을 둔다. 임진·병자 양란으로 해체된 원을 대신한 경기도 주막은 읍치, 장시, 역, 고개, 나루, 포구, 다릿목 등 다양한 지점에 입지하였고, 정치·행정·경제의 중심 한양으로 수렴하는 의주로·동래로·평해로·제주로·경흥로·봉화로·강화로·춘천로와 한강·임진강 내륙수로 연변에 대다수가 분포하였으며, 상품화폐경제의 발달에 추동되어 시장권의 그물망 지선으로까지 확산하였다. 주막은 고개, 계곡, 하천, 암석, 산봉, 여울 등 자연지물과 가로, 나루, 장터, 다릿목, 정자 같은 인문경관에 착안해 명명되었으며, 주식과 숙소의 편의를 제공하는 기본 업무 외에 관인영송, 정탐, 치안유지, 관물수송, 문서체송, 상거래의 공·사적 기능을 수행하였다. 유동인구가 많은 교통요지에는 주막거리 또는 주막촌이 형성되고 시장을 견인하여 상업취락으로 성장한 곳도 등장한다. 주막으로 출발해 규모화를 달성한 이들 노변취락 가운데 일부는 일본제국주의 치하에서 철도역과 행정중심지를 유치해 도시로 성장하지만, 개별 주막은 음식점 또는 숙박업소로의 분화를 강요받고 허가제로 통제되며 식민통치를 위한 재원확보의 대상으로 단속되었다.

영문 초록

Inns originated in Choson’ chartered accommodation of wons which were destroyed in the confrontation with Japanese troops at the end of the 16th century. The hostelry served as a subset of pony station, catering to passengers’and travellers’needs. Inns of Gyeonggi Province were established along the highways heading toward terminal towns at the outskirt of Korean Peninsula, finding their places in town, marketplace, coaching center, pass, ford, bridge, etc. The booming economy in the 17th and 18th centuries helped to spread inns further over the network of secondary lines of local period markets, while those at the crossroad of transportation gathered traveling population to boost local economy. Toponym associated with Gyeonggi inns hints at both physical and cultural features of mountain pass, ravine, stream, rock, mountaintop, rapids, road, ford, market, bridge and pavilion. Innkeepers played significant roles in affording lodge, selling spirits, entertaining travellers, policing local area, acting as plainclothesman, conveying taxes in kind, running posting service, and trading goods. Some Gyeonggi inn-villages emerged as central places hosting railway stations and county towns during the Japanese colonial rule, while other numerous ones were subject to be licensed and controlled as sources of tax for the colonial government.
