국문 초록

본 고 에서는 톨스토이의 소설 『홀스토메르』(1885)의 창작 과정을 추적해 본다. 이 작품의 초고본은 이미 1863년 거의 완성된 상태로 남아있다가, 20년이 더 지난 뒤에 다시금 수정되어 출간된다. 바로 이 시점에 톨스토이의 창작 절정과 영적 위기가 나란히 놓여있다. 과연 이 작품은 작가의 예술세계에서 어느 위치에 놓여야 하는가? 두 판본 사이에는 어떠한 예술적 진화과정이 포함되어있는가? 본고에서는 두 판본에서 드러나는 제목의 문제와, “소유”라는 주제의 문제 그리고 작가의 예술기법에 등장하는 “낯설게 하기 기법”의 문제를 파악해 볼 것이다. 먼저 제목의 변형은 러시아어의 중의적 혹은 기호적 의미로 해석 가능하며, 톨스토이의 지속적인 관심인 “사적 소유”의 문제가 어떻게 변화되는지 주제의 문제를 분석해 볼 것이다. 특히 톨스토이 예술기법의 핵심 문제인 “낯설게 하기”가 60년대에는 예술적 의미에서 영적 위기를 거친 1880년대의 사회 폭로적 의미로 변화하는 과정을 추적해 보는 것은 의미 있는 작업이 될 것이다. 『홀스토메르』는 톨스토이 60년대 세계관의 강한 흔적인 삶에 대한 뜨거운 애정에서 시작하여 정신적 위기의 시기를 거친 후 탄생한 사회 비판적 의미를 동시에 지닌 작품이다. 위기의 시간을 경험하고 난 톨스토이의 이 작품은 작가의 자전적 모습임과 동시에 예언적 내용을 담고 있다. 그러므로 “새로운 확신, 새로운 종교적 세계관과 긴밀히 연결”되어 있는 예술작품 『홀스토메르』는 톨스토이의 다른 어떠한 작품보다도 예술과 설교가 절묘하게 균형 잡힌 작품이다.

영문 초록

This paper traces the creation process of Tolstoy’s novel Holstomer (1885). The first draft of this work had already been almost completed in 1863, and is being revised and published again after 20 years. At this very moment, the peak of Tolstoy’s creation and the spiritual crisis lie side by side. What position should Holstomer take part in the author’s art universe? What artistic evolutionary process is included between the two editions? In this paper, we will examine the following issue: the title of the work in 1885, the subject of “ownership”, and the “unfamiliarity” in the artist’s art technique. First, the transformation of the title can be interpreted as an ambiguous or symbolic meaning of Russian language, and the keyword for “ownership” as the subject of this work reminds us of Tolstoy’s continuing interest, and at the same time, such changes can be seen through these two editions. Interestingly, we will trace the process in which the core problem of Tolstoy’s art technique, “unfamiliarity”, changes from an artistic meaning in the 60’s to a social revelation after going through a spiritual crisis in the 80’s. Holstomer is a work that has a critical social significance at the same time, which began with a passion for life, a strong trace of Tolstoy’s worldview in the 60s, and was born after a period of mental crisis. As Tolstoy’s 1885 creation after experiencing a time of crisis, this work contains both the author s autobiographical appearance and prophetic content. Therefore, Holstomer a work of art that is “closely connected with a new conviction, and a new religious worldview,” is a work that is more exquisitely balanced between art and preaching than any of Tolstoy’s other works.
