국악 대중화의 동시대적 방향성과 담론 - <서울아트마켓> 최근 국악공연의 양상을 중심으로

국문 초록

현재의 국악대중화가 의미하는 바가 무엇이며 이전과의 차별성은 무엇인가에 대한 답변은 대중을 위해 생산되고 연행되는 국악에 대한 지속적인 담론검토와 개념화를 요구한다. 본 논문은 대중적 성공을 목적으로 하는 국악공연에서 나타나는 최근 양상과 의미변화를 살피고, 당대 국악대중화에 대한 실체를 통해 방향성을 논의한다. 국악의 대중화 논의는 여러 위기감을 표출해왔고, 대중문화로의 국악은 정체성에 대한 숙고를 요한다. 국악대중화의 변화와 진화는 음악을 실천하는 주체가 추구하는 창작법과 동시대를 표방하는 방식, 예술가의 의도와 행적, 음악의 특징, 관객과의 공감 지점, 상품으로 진열되고 소개되는 환경에 관한 충분한 설명이 수반되어야 한다. 따라서 국내외 시민을 관객으로 하는 <서울아트마켓> 같은 플랫폼은 국악대중화 논의에서 분리될 수 없다. 대중적 국악공연에서 음악적 방향 결정의 중심에는 국악전문가가 있고, 예술가들은 기존의 음악을 답습하지 않고 새로운 음악을 구현하기 위한 독자적 활동으로 자신만의 색채와 음악성 표출에 주력한다. 최근 국악대중화는 스펙과 역량이 강화된 국악연주자의 활약으로 전자음향이나 재즈, 락, 월드뮤직, 서양악기 등 대중음악적 요소가 더욱 전문적이고 체계적으로 국악과 접목된다. 국악기를 개량하는 것이 아니라 기존 악기로 새로운 주법을 개발하고, 생황이나 운라 등 생소한 전통악기를 사용해 신선함을 준다. 예술가는 흥과 신명만으로 관객의 호응을 끄는 것이 아니라 여성으로, 한국인으로, 동시대 사람으로, 아픔을 갖는 현대인으로의 삶 속에서 함께 고민하고 위로하는 진솔함으로 소통하고 있고, 이것을 국악이 갖는 대중성의 하나로 정의할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The music presented in modern gugak performances has new appearance something different from newly composed traditional music and away from its format of earlier times. The research examines the distinctive features in newly composed music of recent times by scrutinizing the music presented in Journeys to Korean Music in Seoul Art Market, which widens the boundary and layer of creative Korean traditional music. As the trend changes rapidly while at the same time new music springs up in an instant time, a concrete case study is required to understand the discourse in it. The recently composed traditional music still continues the criterion suggested and requested for the qualification of new traditional music, while at the same time shows some new features. First of all, the new music highlights traditional elements and combines with foreign musical elements, including electronic media. Second, various musical elements in traditional music have been applied to the new music even though some scholars concerned they are insufficient at that moment. Thirdly, the impossibility of maintaining traditional musicality possibly incurred from free style composition can be settled as educated, trained, and experienced musicians in the traditional music field make and lead the music. The ideas on musicality of recently composed traditional music brings up new interpretation. First, electronic sound and visual effect are no longer considered to be “sensational” or “commercial.” Instead, they become ordinary part of the music that diaper, balances and supports the music. Second, the modern use of traditional instruments does not mean modification or invention of an instrument. It is more related to the new technique and performance skills. Moreover, the use of alienated instruments gives new life to the ulla and yanggeum with new musical feasibility. Finally, the recognition of the musicians themselves, reflection of identity, communication with the audience, and the life mirroring in the music are contemporary, popular and “Korean” in the context of traditional music’s enthusiasm, healing and meditation, enjoying and relaxation.
