고전읽기를 통한 계열별 글쓰기교육의 실제

국문 초록

이 연구는 인문과 실용이라는 두 마리 토끼 잡기식 교육이 가능한가라는 질문에서 출발한다. 다수의 대학들이 지식정보사회의 교육에서 강조되는 창의성, 소통의 능력 함양을 반영한 교양교육을 추구하는 동시에, 다른 한편으로는 학생들의 전공에 맞추는 특성화 교육을 진행하고 있다. 이 연구는 이화여대 <고전읽기와 글쓰기>의 공대 특성화 수업 사례를 통하여 두 교육목표가 어떻게 합치될 수 있을 것인지에 대한 가능성, 효과 및 필요성에 대해 논의하였다. 연구 결과, 인문학적 교양교육과 실용적 교육 중심의 지향점이 서로 상충될 수 있으며 따라서 그 교육방법에 있어 많은 고민이 필요할 것으로 나타났다. 고전은 교양교육에 있어 매우 적합한 교재이나, 고전목록을 학생의 전공에 맞추어 선별할 경우의 교육적 효과는 두드러지지 않았다. 글쓰기 역시 전공 영역의 활용도를 고려한 실용적 교육보다는, 다양한 주제에 대해 읽고 말하기(토론)를 연계하여 글을 쓰게 함으로써 보편적 교양과 지식을 습득하는 방법을 지향해야 할 것으로 나타났다. 다만 중고등과정에서 익숙해진 교육방식을 고려하여 독해분량 조절이나 단계적 글쓰기 등 공학도에게 적합한 읽기와 쓰기 방식을 탄력적으로 실행함으로써, 고전읽기와 글쓰기에 대한 성취감을 느낄 수 있게 하는 방법을 통하여 특성화 교육의 의미를 찾을 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Many colleges have promoted the liberal education to develop students’ creativity and communication ability for the intelligence-information society. In addition, different colleges have specialized in different educational program on practical writing to emphasize their expertise. With this backdrop, this study explores ‘how can the specialized liberal education for engineering be effective?’, with the case of specialized class (‘Reading Classics and Writing’) for engineering in Ewha Womans University. The results are as follows. The orientation of liberal education could not correspond with the goal of specialized education in engineering, and thus more research is needed about these issues. The classics are suitable for liberal education, but it was not effective to select the specific classics list reflecting on each student’s major. Compared with the practical writing on engineering, the general writing style, that is to say the humanities-oriented writing style connected with reading classics and debating on, was better for engineering students to acquire basic knowledge and enhance the level of their culture. The flexible teaching style such as adjusting reading volume and writing by stages could be answer to connect liberal education and specialized writing education.
