국문 초록

2016년 종교인구조사에서 한국의 불교인구가 지속적으로 감소하고 있는 것으로 발표되었다. 또 이 조사에서 개신교 인구가 불교인구를 넘어섬으로써 한국불교계에서는 위기감이 고조되기도 했다. 이와 함께 한국의 종교인구 자체가 50% 아래로 떨어져, 한국사회의 탈종교화·세속화(secularization)가 가속화되고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 서구에서는 이미 세속화에 부응하여 불교를 재구성하려는 노력이 ‘세속불교(Secular Buddhism)’라는 이름으로 활발히 전개되고 있다. 이 글은 스티븐 배철러(Stephen Batchelor)를 중심으로 ‘세속불교’의 내용과 특징, 논란과 비판, 그리고 그 의미를 살펴본다. 이 연구는 현대 한국불교의 미래, 즉 세속화의 도전과 기회를 미리 예측해보고자 한다는 의미를 지닌다. 오늘날 글로벌문화 속에서 동양인들도 서양사상의 흐름을 일정 부분 공유할 수 밖에 없다. 서구 ‘세속불교’의 흐름 속에서 오늘날 한국의 젊은 세대들의 문제의식을 선제적으로 포착해볼 수도 있을 것이다, 또 불가지론적이며 개인주의적인 현대인에게 잠재되어 있는 철학적·종교적 탐색의 양상들을 추출해볼 수도 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 세속의 시대에 한국불교, 나아가 종교의 가능성에 대해 모색해볼 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

According to the 2016 Religious Demographic Survey, the Buddhist population in Korea is continuously decreasing. The survey indicates that the Protestant population has surpassed the Buddhist population, which raises a sense of crisis in the Korean Buddhist world. At the same time, the religious population of Korea has fallen below 50 percent, and thus there is growing attention for the secularization of Korean society. In the West, the efforts to reconstruct Buddhism in response to secularization are already being actively developed under the name of “Secular Buddhism.” This article, focusing on Stephen Batchelor, examines the content and characteristics, controversy and criticism, and the meaning of “Secular Buddhism.” This study is meant to predict the future of modern Korean Buddhism, by focusing on challenges and opportunities of secularization. Amid the development of today’s global culture, it is inevitable for Asian countries to share the trends of Western thought. In the flow of Western “Secular Buddhism,” we will be able to preemptively capture the consciousness of today’s young Korean generation, and extract the aspects of philosophical and religious exploration that are latent in agnostic individualistic modern people. It will give us an insight into the possibilities of Korean Buddhism and religion in this era of the secular world.
