국문 초록

한국사회 노인 인구의 급격한 증가는 국가재정의 부담과 국민 삶의 질 향상이라는 사회적 문제의 제기로 이어져 관련 연구의 필요성이 대두되었으며, 특히 노년기 다양한 영역에서의 어려움은 노인의 사회적 배제에 대한 연구로 이어졌다. 하지만, 독거노인의 사회적 배제에 대한 국내 연구는 아직까지 소수에 불과하며, 특히 독거노인 집단 내의 사회적 배제 영역과 정도의 이질성에 주목하는 연구는 매우 드물다. 본 연구는, A광역자치단체에 거주하는 독거노인을 대상으로 이들의 사회적 배제(가족관계, 경제적 상황, 고용, 건강상태, 사회참여, 주거소유)를 유형화하고, 인구사회학적 요인과의 관련성을 살펴보았다. 분석의 결과, 사회적 배제의 유형은 수준별로 저･중･고 3가지 형태로 유형화되었으며 도시지역에 거주할수록 ‘중수준 사회적 배제’와 ‘고수준의 사회적 배제’에 속할 확률이 높았다. 남자이고, 연령이 낮을수록, 독거기간이 길수록 ‘고수준의 사회적 배제’에 속할 확률이 높았다. 분석결과를 바탕으로, 중앙정부 및 당해 광역자치단체가 제공하는 서비스가 독거노인의 개별특성과 수요에 부합하는지 살펴보고, 향후 독거노인의 사회적 배제에 대한 정책적 제언과 연구의 방향을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

A growing body of literature linking a rapid increase of the aging population in Korea and the rise of social cost and burden. In particular, challenges in later life may emerge in multiple life domains (i.e., financial, social, and psychological), and these difficulties extends to research on social exclusion. However, few studies have been conducted on social exclusion of older adults living alone. Even fewer studies focus on the heterogeneity of domains and levels of social exclusion, and study typology of social exclusion and related factors. To fill the gap of the literature, this study carried out policy analysis by identifying profiles of social exclusion of older adults living alone, and comparing support services and policies of local communities. This study examined patterns of social exclusion (i.e., relationship with family, financial status, employment, health status, social participation, home ownership) of older adults living alone and associated socioeconomic factors, using data from 355 older adults aged 65 and older who were living alone residing in Local Government A. Results indicate that participants can be grouped into ‘low social exclusion’ profile, ‘moderate social exclusion’ profile, and ‘high social exclusion’ profile. Older adults living in urban areas are more likely to belong to the ‘moderate social exclusion’ profile and the ‘high social exclusion’ profile. Males, younger, and longer duration of living alone are factors associated a higher likelihood of belonging to the ‘high social exclusion’ profile. Applying the study findings, local government policies are analyzed to explore whether the needs of older adults are addressed. In addition, policy implications for future research on social exclusion of older adults living alone are discussed.
