한류가 국내 고등교육기관의 외국인 유학생 유치에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

한국 문화 및 상품의 글로벌 확산으로 설명되는 한류의 파급효과는 점차 증가하고 있으며 연구 범위도 확대되고 있다. 본 연구는 한국 방송프로그램의 수출량을 한류 효과의 대리 변수로 선정하여 한국 고등교육기관의 외국인 유학생 유치에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 중력모형을 바탕으로 2001년부터 2018년까지 한국 방송프로그램 수출량이 가장 많은 21개 국가의 패널데이터를 사용하였으며 PPML 기법을 이용하여 실증분석을 진행하였다. 분석결과 한류는 국내 고등교육기관의 외국인 유학생 유치에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며 국가 간 물리적 거리로부터 발생하는 부정적 영향을 완화시켜 주는 것으로 나타났다. 더불어 한국과의 총 무역량, 국내 고등교육기관의 R&D 지출도 외국인 유학생 유치에 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 한류의 국내 고등교육기관 외국인 유학생 유치에 대한 영향을 패널데이터를 이용하여 정량적으로 분석한 최초의 논문이라는 점에서 의의가 있으며 고등교육기관 및 정부 차원의 정책적 시사점이 있다.

영문 초록

The Korean Wave(Hallyu) refers to the global spread of Korean culture, products and services, and its research scope has been steadily increasing. This study uses the amount of Korean broadcasting content exported as a proxy variable of the Hallyu effect and analyzes its influences on international student recruitment at Korean higher education institutions (HEIs). Based on gravity model, this study uses the panel data of 21 countries from 2001 to 2018, where Korean broadcasting content had been exported the most. Then, estimates are rendered of the results by using the Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) procedure. Throughout the research, we find that Hallyu has a significant positive effect on attracting international student to Korean HEIs and a diminishing negative effect of the distance between Korea and students’ home country. We also determine the positive effects of total trade volume between Korea and these other countries, as well as the R&D expenditures of Korean HEIs. This study has significance in that it is the first research paper that quantitatively analyzes the impacts of Hallyu on attracting international students to Korean HEIs using panel data and has policy implications for the perspectives government and HEIs.
