다산 정약용의 『대학』 이해와 그 정치사상적 의미

국문 초록

이 연구는 다산 『대학』관의 특징과 그 정치사상적 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 그 연구 방법으로는 다산 『대학』관의 정치사상적 의미를 주자학이나 양명학의 그것과 비교하여 고찰하는 방식을 취했다. 이를 통해 다산의 『대학』관이 경학사상사에서 지니는 의의도 함께 살펴보고자 했다. 다산은 ‘대학’을 ‘태학’으로 풀이한다. 그리고 『대학』을 최고 통치자 집단을 양성하는 목민학의 기본 교재로 여긴다. 이것은 다산이 군주를 중심으로 한 관료정치를 지향하고 있음을 보여준다. 다산은 ‘명덕’을 효·제·자로 풀이하고, 천하에 명덕을 밝히는 방법을 ‘친민’에서 찾는다. 그는 ‘친민’을 천자가 태학에서 효·제·자의 예를 실천하여 모범을 보임으로써 ‘백성들이 그것을 본받아 서로 친하는 것’으로 풀이한다. 이것은 다산이 유가의 인륜가치가 실현되는 세상을 지향한다는 점을 보여준다. 다산은 ‘격물치지’를 ‘물’의 본말을 헤아리고, ‘일’의 종시를 아는 것으로 풀이한다. 이것은 기존 주자나 왕양명의 ‘궁리’와 ‘치양지’의 정치사상을 부정했다는 의미를 지닌다. 다산은 ‘성의장’을 하나의 독립된 장으로 봄으로써 ‘성의’를 ‘치국·평천하’를 실현하는 근본 공부로 설정할 수 있었다. 다산은 ‘평천하장’을 『대학』의 중심으로 여기고, 그로부터 정치이념과 그것을 실현하는 방법 및 정사의 두 가지 강령을 도출해 낸다. 그는 입현공치와 안민정치를 통해 백성들의 원욕(願慾)을 구현하고자 했다. 이것들은 주자학이나 양명학의 『대학』관과 비교할 때 다산만의 독자성을 확보한다는 점에서 그 경학사상사적 의의가 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This study discusses the characteristics of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’s understanding of the Great Learning and its significance as political thought. It examines Dasan’s political thought reflected in his understanding of the Great Learning in comparison with that of Zhuzi studies or Yangming studies. It also assesses the importance of Dasan’s understanding of the Great Learning in the history of thoughts on Confucian classics. Dasan interprets daxue 大學 as taixue 太學 (Imperial Academy) and regards the Great Learning as the basic textbook of ‘the study of governing the people’ (mumin xue 牧民學) that educates a group of supreme rulers-to-be. This shows that Dasan was pursuing a centralized bureaucracy with the king as its nucleus. Dasan understands mingde 明德 (illustrious virtue) as xiao 孝 (filial duty), ti 悌(politeness) and ci 慈 (benevolence), and find the way to manifest illustrious virtue in qinmin 親民, which, in his interpretation, means that people come to love each other by following the example of the monarch’s practicing xiao, ti and ci in the Imperial Academy. This reveals that Dasan aims for a world where Confucian morality is realized. Dasan interprets gewu zhizhi 格物致知 as discerning the root and branches of ‘the thing’ and knowing the beginning and end of ‘the work.’ This interpretation is worth noting since it shows that Dasan’s political thought follows neither Zhu Xi’s theory of ‘exploring the principles of things’ nor Wang Yangming’s theory of ‘extending innate knowledge.’ Dasan deems the “Chengyi” 誠意 (making the will sincere) chapter an independent chapter, which enables him to present ‘making the will sincere’ as a fundamental study for ‘ruling the country and making the world at peace.’ Dasan regards the “Ping Tianxia” 平天下 (making the world at peace) chapter as the core of the Great Learning, and derives political thought and the method of realizing it from this chapter. He also formulates two political measures based on this chapter: employing talented and virtuous men and caring the people. By implementing these measures, he is intent on fulfilling the desires of the people. This political thought endows Dasan with scholarly originality in interpreting the Great Learning, distinguished from Zhuzi studies and Yangming studies. In this regard, Dasan’s political thought derived from the Great Learning has considerable significance in the history of thoughts on Confucian classics.
