국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 도교사에 등장하는 도교 점복의 기능과 위상을 분석한 것이다. 고대의 점복은 다양하게 행해졌던 것으로 보이지만, 자료의 부족으로 인해 고대 한국선가와 점복의 관련성을 말하기는 어렵다. 고려시대에 빈번하게 행해졌던 풍수도참 등의 점복은 도교와는 관련이 없고, 오히려 불교나 유교와의 관련 속에서 행해졌다고 말할 수 있다. 조선 중기 이후에는 도교가 방외인(方外人)이나 소외 계층에서 퍼져나갔고, 점복도 성행했다. 도교 수행자들은 점복을 빌려 왜란 호란을 위시해서 안팎으로 고난에 시달리던 민중들을 도와주는 기능을 했으니, 그 본질은 수행의 계제에 따른 법안(法眼)의 도력(道力)이라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 한국 도교사에 보이는 점복은 민중들에게 권선(勸善)의 수단으로 이용되었고 나아가 전도(傳道)나 구도(求道)의 방편으로 사용되었다. 이렇게 중국과 비교해볼 때 조선시대의 도교사에서 점복의 비중이 높게 나타나고 있는 것도 한국 도교의 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 관성제군(關聖帝君) 영첨(靈籤)이란 점복은 조선 말에서 일제강점기를 거치면서 매우 성행했고, 지금까지도 민족종교계통에서 구도의 방법으로 계승되고 있어서, 중국이나 일본 등의 도관에서 행해지고 있는 기복적인 영첨류와는 다른 한국 도교 점복의 특징을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis analyzes the function and status of Taoist divination in the history of Korean Taoism. Although it appears that divination was executed in diverse form in ancient times, it is difficult to address the relevance between divination and the ancient Korean Zen sect due to a lack of data. However, it can be stated that divination, such as the Pungsu-docham, that was practiced during the Goryeo Dynasty is not related to Taoism, but rather related to Buddhism or Confucianism. Since the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, Taoism has been spread to outsiders or the alienated classes, with divination often being practiced. Although Taoist disciples attempted to assist the general public with divination during challenging times such as Japanese invasion and the Manchurian war, the power of spiritual enlightenment in accordance with the phases of asceticism can be deemed to be the essences of Taoism. Accordingly, the divination described in the history of Korean Taoism was used as a means of soliciting contributions for religious purposes, and, furthermore, as a way of salvation. Accordingly, compared to China, the important role played by divination in the history of Taoism during the Joseon Dynasty is one of the characteristics of Korean Taoism. In particular, the style of divination referred to as Gwangseongjegun Yeongcheom was very prevalent through the period of Japanese military occupation of Korea at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, and it continues to this day as a means to enlightenment in the national religious sector. This differentiates the characteristics of Korean Taoist divination from other branches of yeongcheom, also called “praying for good fortune,” as practiced in Taoist temples in China or Japan.
