영문 초록

This paper examines the relationship between income inequality and digital devide in the urban China. We use official urban households income survey data from 1997 to 2002. This data set was collected by the Urban Households Survey Unit of the National Statistical Bureau of China. The analysis shows that the income inequality between the rich and poor urban households in China continuously increased in the period of analysis. However, the digital devide between the rich and poor urban households in China has decreased from the early 2000s after slight increase in the latter half of the 1990s. This result indicates there is no relationship between the income inequality and digital devide among the rich and poor urban households in China. We also find that the income disparity between the coastal and inland regions of China has not been changed practically in the period of analysis. However, the digital devide between the coastal and inland regions was not increased. This result also indicates there is no clear relationship between the income disparity and digital devide among the coastal and inland regions. As a result, we did not find any evidence to support the argument that digital devide can cause a income inequality.
