중국의 대(對)선진국 잠재교역규모 추정

국문 초록

본 연구는 중국의 WTO가입 이후 대 선진국 수출이 잠재교역규모 이상을 시현했는지 규명할 목적을 갖고 있다. 이 질문에 답하기 위해 중력모형을 사용하여 중국의 대(對) 선진국 22국과의 잠재교역규모 2001년과 2007년 구분하여 추정하였다. 중국의 2007년 수출액 기준 10억불 이상의 국가들만을 대상으로 1995년부터 2007년까지 총71개 국가의 쌍패널 교역자료를 만들어 계량분석을 시도하였다. 중력모형을 통한 잠재교역규모의 추정에 있어서 보다 더 정교하고 편의가 적은 추정결과를 얻기 위해서 Between effect추정, HT(Hausman-Taylor)추정, HT AR(1) 추정 및 GLS AR(1)추정의 방법으로 추정하였고, 추정의 결과 Between effect추정과 GLS AR(1)추정기법이 가장 적절한 것으로 판명되었다. 상기 두 추정기법으로 중국의 대(對) 22개 선진국과의 잠재교역규모를 나타내는 교역예상치를 ‘표본외 추정(‘out-of sample projection’)방법으로 얻고 이를 실제교역액과 비교하였다. 추정의 결과 중국의 WTO가입 이전과 이후 잠재교역액을 훨씬 상회하는 실제수출을 시현한 것 같지는 않은 것으로 나타났다. 아울러, 회귀계수의 크기로 가늠해본다면 어느 추정기법의 경우든 오스트리아와 독일이 중국의 미실현 잠재수출액이 상대적으로 높은 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to investigate trade potential for China and each of 22 developed countries using modified gravity model. To avoid biased results stemming from simple OLS estimation, especially heteroskedasticity problem, various estimation techniques were used, i.e., Between effect, Hausman-Taylor, Hausman-Taylor AR(1) and Random Effects GLS with Common AR(1). Considering the magnitude of our regression coefficients, Between effect and Random Effects GLS with Common AR(1) seems to be the most relevant estimation methods to our model. The estimated coefficients from the Between effect estimation and Random Effects GLS with Common AR(1) were then employed to predict those bilateral trade potentials. The ratios of actual export and potential export, following the two regression methods, are all near around one, indicating that our methods are somewhat relevant to the realiy. The results show that China didn’t seem to export to the 22 developed countries significantly more than the predicted potential trade level in both in 2001 and 2007. The coefficients also exhibit that China has relatively higher trade(export) potential with Germany and Austria than any other countries.
