거리의 미술 스토리텔링에 관한 小考

국문 초록

영국의 뱅크시 없이 이제 길거리 낙서화 즉, 그래피티를 상상하기 어렵다. 2010년 타임지는 그를 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인 중 한 명으로 선정했다. 21세기의 독창적인 아티스트로 평가됐기 때문이다. 길거리 낙서그림으로 여겨지던 그래피티가 세계인의 주목을 끄는 작품으로 평가받기 시작한데는 뱅크시의 역할이 컸다. 뱅크시는 종전의 그래피티 작가와는 달리 작품마다 자신의 분명한 메시지를 전달하기 위한 스토리를 담고 있다. 그는 스토리텔링을 통해 왜곡된 세계 질서, 자본주의 모순, 전도된 권위와 공권력, 자본이 지배하는 미술시장 등을 풍자하고 비판한다. 또 그의 독창적 스텐실 그림에서는 패러디와 차용, 비판적 혼성모방 등 여러 기법이 동원돼 효과를 극대화하고 개개 담벼락의 생김새와 부착물이 최대한 활용된다. 아울러 평범한 사람의 등장 등 주제의 민주화와 함께 쥐 같은 동물의 의인화 등을 통해 작품이 구체적으로 그려진다. 이 같은 스토리텔링에서 웃음과 분노, 통쾌함과 충격 등이 전해지고 사람들은 열광한다. 뱅크시의 유명세로 그의 작품 값이 폭등하고, 그는 이제 제도권 작가로 편입됐다는 지적도 받는다. 또 그의 작품을 공유한다는 당초 취지가 퇴색하고, 그의 그래피티를 뜯어내 팔려는 탐욕이 불거지는 등 부작용도 초래되고 있지만 뱅크시의 작품은 그래피티의 역사를 바꾼 오브제인 만큼 스토리텔링 등 문화콘텐츠 관점에서 새롭게 분석하고 연구해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Now, it is hard to imagine the street doodle drawing, graffiti without the British artist Banksy. 2010, Time Magazine selected him as one of the most influential 100 people in the world. Because his unique creativity was evaluated value of the art in the 21st century. Graffiti, once was considered as a drawing scribble only, attracts the attention of the world to work and his role was great to be assessed. Banksy, unlikely usual graffiti painter, contains a story of which is for transmitting his clear message in every his works. Through the storytelling method, he satirizes and assumes a critical attitude toward distorted worldly disorder, contradiction of capitalism, reversed authority of the government, and fine-art market under the control of the capital. With the creative stencil paintings based upon the reality, various artistic skills like parody, critical pastiche are being mobilized to obtain the anticipated sarcasm and critics. And his works are substantially described by the personification of the animal, specially rat, by the democratization of the subject appearing the common people, maximizing the effect of particular shape of wall and extraneous objects. The people are wildly excited at this sort of storytelling method, making laughter, anger, thrill and chic. Producing unfavorable side effects such as the abrupt price rise, reinsertion into mainstream painters, the works of Banksy, which changed the history of graffiti, should be analyzed and quested in a new and various way of the cultural contents like a storytelling method.
