국문 초록

교육은 문화의 본질적인 요소일 뿐만 아니라 미래의 문화를 변모시키는 주요한 동력으로 작용해 왔다. 그러나 기존의 대학 교육은 높은 교육비에 비하여 정작 사회가 필요로 하는 지식과 기술을 가르치지 못한다는 비판에 직면한 가운데, 유대시티, 코세라, 에드엑스 등 무크 (MOOC)라 불리는 대규모공개온라인강좌가 높은 교육비와 낮은 대학교육의 질이라는 고질적인 대학교육을 개혁할 대안으로 급부상되고 있다. MOOC는 전통적인 교육방식에 비하여 엄청난 숫자의 수강 인원을 감당할 수 있고 교육비를 획기적으로 낮출 수 있는 잠재력이 있어 사회적으로 큰 관심사가 되고 있다. 또한 MOOC가 발전시킨 정보기술과 교수법은 전통적인 교육의 질적 개선에 기여할 뿐만 아니라, 공개적인 특성으로 인하여 공익 증진과 효율적인 평생교육의 수단이 될 가능성도 높다. 이에 본고에서는 돌풍의 주역인 3대 MOOC를 중심으로 열풍의 배경, 대학교육과의 (보완재 또는 대체재로서의) 관계, MOOC 강좌의 특성 (대학교육에 대한 함의), 수익모델 등을 살펴보고, 이것이 한국의 대학교육에 던지는 시사점 등을 알아보았다.

영문 초록

Recently, the MOOC has emerged as an alternative to cure the chronic diseases of higher education such as the ever-increasing tuition fees and the quality of university education. This paper provides a brief explanation for its birth, development and rapid growth and reflects on its effect on the current university education, characteristic features, and monetization model. Finally, we discuss the implications that the MOOC casts on the Korean university education reform. As a MOOC can accommodate unlimited number of students in one course, it has the potential to lower the costs of the university education to almost nothing. In spite of skepticism about the educational quality of the MOOC from some quarters, this cost-reducing possibility of the MOOC may disrupt the current university education system. Openness of the MOOC allows anyone to access the lectures given by pre-eminent professors at no cost at any time at any place, increasing the opportunity for higher learning. Information technology and pedagogical methodology employed in the MOOC are expected to improve the outcome of education.
