연접묘를 통해 본 고구려 적석총의 전개 과정

국문 초록

연접묘는 먼저 축조된 무덤에 다른 무덤을 덧붙여가며 축조된 고분으로 적게는 2~3기, 많게는10기 이상의 무덤이 연접하기도 한다. 연접묘는 산사면 또는 하천과 인접한 평지에 단독묘와 군집을이루어 분포하는데, 동일 형식의 무덤이 연접하는 유형과 다른 형식의 무덤이 연접하는 유형이 있으며 그 양상은 복잡한 모습이다. 본 논문에서는 고력묘자 고분군과 통구 고분군을 중심으로 연접묘의 분포 양상을 살펴보고 전개과정과 의미를 파악해보고자 하였다. 고력묘자 고분군은 연접묘가 특정 군집에서만 확인되고 규모도 고분군 내에서 대형에 해당하는 특징이 있으며 통구 고분군은 하위 고분군별로 연접묘의 유형 및규모에 있어 서로 다른 양상을 보였다. 이를 토대로 연접묘의 전개 과정을 적석총의 각 형식이 출현하는 시점을 기준으로 3단계로 나누어 살펴보았다. 또한 각 단계에 대한 시간적 위치는 전개 과정을 고구려의 정치적 변동과 연관지어살펴봄으로써 구체화시켜보았다. 1단계(무기단 적석총 단계)는 기원전 1세기~기원후 1세기 중반으로 고력묘자 고분군과 통구 고분군에서 연접묘의 축조가 시작되며 고력묘자 고분군은 산사면 상부에서, 통구 고분군은 우산하와칠성산 고분군을 중심으로 축조된다. 2단계(기단 적석총 단계)는 1세기 후반~3세기 중반으로 고력묘자 고분군의 경우 아직 자료가 확인되지는 않지만 여러 정황을 통해 보았을 때 연접묘를 비롯한 고분 축조가 지속적으로 이루어졌을가능성이 있으며 통구 고분군은 연접묘의 분포 범위가 확대되고 수량도 증가하는 모습을 보인다. 3단계(계단 적석총 단계)는 3세기 후반~5세기 후반으로 고력묘자 고분군의 경우 3세기 말 이후연접묘의 축조가 중단되며 통구 고분군은 수량이 급증할 뿐 아니라 하위 고분군별로 축조 양상이 다르게 나타난다. 특히 3단계는 통구 고분군에서 대형·초대형 적석총이 등장하는 시기로 연접묘는여전히 중·소형 적석총에서만 확인되는 특징을 보인다. 연접묘의 각 단계별 전개 과정에서 나타나는 양상은 고구려의 수도 이전, 나부 체제의 변화 등 정치적 변동 과정과 연관성이 있는 것으로 볼 수 있으며 연접묘는 가족묘 혹은 집단묘를 넘어 고구려의 정치적 변동 속에서 집단의 결속을 유지시키기 위한 수단 중 하나로 작용하였을 것으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

Connection tomb is a tomb constructed by adding another tomb to the one built before and tombs as few as 2~3 and as many as more than 10 are connected to each other. Connection tomb is spread as a cluster with a single tomb at a mountain slope or on a plain near a river. There are types where identically or differently formed tombs are connected, showing complex aspects. This paper aims to examine the distribution of connection tombs and identify the development and meaning centered on the Goryeokmyoja(高力墓子) tombs and Tonggu(通溝) tombs. Goryeokmyoja tombs are characterized by the connection tomb only within certain clusters and in a large scale. Results of an analysis based on the survey data show that Tonggu tombs have a different aspect in types and scales of the connection tombs by subordinate tombs. Based on above, the study investigated the developmental process of the connection tomb into three phases based on the periods when each form of the stone mound tombs appeared. The first is the phase of the stone mound tomb without a base, during which time when the construction of the connection tomb began at the Goryeokmyoja tombs and the Tonggu tombs. Even though there is no identifiable data in case of the Goryeokmyoja tombs, in Phase 2, there is a possibility that connection tombs continued to be built. In addition, Tonggu tombs show that the distribution range of the connection tombs expanded and thequantity also increased rapidly. In Phase 3, in case of the Goryeokmyoja tombs, the construction of the connection tomb had ceased since the end of the 3rd century and the Tonggu tombs came to show a different construction mode by subordinate tombs. In particular, in Phase 3, large to super-sized stone mound tombs appeared at the Tonggu tombs and the connection tomb may still be identified only from middle to small-sized stone mound tombs. The developmental processes of the connection tomb in each phase reveal an aspect which may be interpreted as a relationship between several political transitions including the capital relocation of the Goguryeo Dynasty and the change of the Nabu System. In conclusion, connection tombs may be considered in relationship to the political changes in the Goguryeo Dynasty beyond concepts of a family tomb or a group tomb. Furthermore, in such political transitions, it may have acted as a means to maintaining the kinship and enhancing the group solidarity.
