Elizabeth Bishop as a Translator: Focusing on Brazilian Women Writers

국문 초록

20세기 미국 여성 시인 엘리자베스 비숍은 막스 야콥에서부터 옥타비오 파스에 이르기까지 프랑스어, 포르투갈어, 스페인어로 이루어진 외국 작가들의 작품을 영어로 번역했다. 특히 비숍은 거의 20년 동안 브라질에 거주하면서 그녀의 동시대 브라질 작가들의 작품에 매료되었다. 그녀는 창의적 상상력을 발현시켜 앨리스 브랜트와 클래리스 리스펙토르 등의 브라질 여성 작가들뿐 아니라 다수의 브라질 시인들과 소설가들의 작품을 영어로 번역했다. 더욱이 비숍의 번역 작품은 픽션과 논픽션 사이의 경계를 가로지르고 있다. 비숍은 브랜트의『헬레나 몰리의 일기』와 리스펙토르의 단편 소설의 번역을 통해 번역이 외국 문화에 대한 우리의 인식에 중요한 역할을 한다는 견해를 피력한다. 요컨대, 비숍은 축어적인 번역을 거부했음은 물론 원작의 단어에 침묵하거나 탁월하게 변형하고자 했다. 리스펙토르의 단편「마모셋」과 「세상에서 가장 작은 여인」등은 그 대표적 예다. 비숍은 리스펙토르의 작품을 번역할 때 원작의 울림을 전달하기 위해 리스펙토르의“명료하고, 유동적이며 환기적인 산문”을 영어로 재구성했다. 나아가 비숍은 브랜트와 리스펙토르의 작품에 영감을 받아「우기 시즌을 위한 노래」와「브라질, 1502년 1월 1일」과 같은 브라질에 관한 자신의 시를 발전시킬 수 있었다. 이 시들은 비숍이 그녀의 초기 시에서 보여준 여행자의 시각과 구별되는 내부자의 시각을 습득했다는 것을 명백히 보여준다. 이렇게 브라질 여성 작가들에 대한 비숍의 번역은 그녀의 예술적 진보에 중요한 역할을 했다.

영문 초록

A twentieth-century American woman poet Elizabeth Bishop translates many foreign writers’works with the languages of French, Portuguese, and Spanish ranging from Max Jacob to Octavio Paz into English. Particularly, Bishop is preoccupied with her contemporary Brazilian writers’works while she is living in Brazil for almost 20 years. Through her creative imagination, she translates a lot of Brazilian poetry and prose including Brazilian women writers like Alice Brant and Clarice Lispector into English. Significantly, Bishop’s translations cross the border between fiction and nonfiction. Bishop has an insight into the importance of translation in our awareness for foreign cultures as shown in her translations like Brant’s The Diary of‘Helena Morley’and Lispector’s short stories. By rejecting literal translations, Bishop desires to translate more creatively by either silencing or prominently transforming the words of the original texts. This is exemplified in her translations of Lispector’s short stories such as“Marmosets”and“The Smallest Woman in the World.”When translating these stories, Bishop wants to recast Lispector’s“clear, flowing, and evocative prose”into English in order to produce the echo of the original texts. Inspired by the works from Brant and Lispector, Bishop could develop her own poems on Brazil such as“Rainy Season; Sub- Tropics” and“Brazil, January 1, 1502.”These poems clearly demonstrate that Bishop acquires an insider’s perspective distinguished from a tourist’s view in her earlier poems. Undoubtedly, Bishop’s translations for Brazilian women writers play a fundamental role in her artistic development.
